Boeing was building us a big ol' virtual fence down south to keep them dirty Mexicans out of our yard. but after many cost overruns, missed deadlines and a faulty product, funding is being halted on the project.

However, a ton of money is being diverted to more traditional surveillance methods.

Some politicians have suggested that until the border is under control it's useless to try and reform immigration laws.

Can we control 2000miles of border - even with todays technologies?
Should immigration reform hinge on border control?
How are we gonna deal with them sneaky Canadians?

We can. I'm not sure we can do so humanely.

There needs to be border control for more reasons than just immigration reform. Anyone can walk in with nearly any type of weapon.

Same way we do now: buy up all their prescription drugs.

Nope. Which isn't to say we shouldn't try but it's not going to happen.

Only if we never want any form of immigration control. See Question #1.

Prison camps in the Carolinas.

The old fashioned way: landmines.

Depends what you mean by "control", really. You can, as is normally the case with these things, never stop absolutely everyone you don't want to get in from doing so, as there's always human error and ingenuity, or just stuff breaking, to take into account. How high does the percentage intercepted need to be to qualify?

Well Boeing's original claim was that it's system would identify and characterize the threat of 90 to 100% of all illegal passages.

I suppose if that was reality we'd have to consider the borders 'controlled' at that point.

However I still have my concerns about the Canadians. I'm pretty sure they're responsible for the economic crisis, global warming in the US and Micheal Jackson's untimely death. They probably were behind the disappearance of the numbers too - but I have no proof.

I'm not particularly concerned with illegal immigrants. I'm more concerned with, not to be too hysterical about it, but terrorists moving freely across the border using the coyotes that are already in place to facilitate illegal immigration.

You need ~12000 people. Put one every half mile or so, 8 hour shifts, some basic surveillance equipment, an uncomfortable lawn chair, a radio, and you've solved most of the problem. Cheaper than building and maintaining a fence, more flexible and useful.

the number would actually be closer to 15,000 when you factor in supervisory and admin staff. It would require enforcement staff and facilities. I would estimate the annual cost at somewhere in the 1.8-2.3 Billion dollars a year in funding (not including enforcement staff).

It'd be cheaper to build a fence and install monitoring stations.

I'd never think a coyote could carry a single full-grown Mexican, let alone entire families.

I assume you're just teasing, but just in case:

Quote:
In the Southwest United States, a "coyote" is a person paid to smuggle illegal immigrants across the border between Mexico and the United States.

You don't find the idea of small brown men riding wild prairie dogs through west Texas in the cover of darkness even mildly amusing?
