(CNN) -- A Kentucky man high on marijuana and drunk on whiskey put his 5-week-old son in the oven Sunday and left him there overnight, police said.
The oven door was slightly ajar, and the oven was not turned on.

Clearly he wants the bun back in the oven.

I hate to Gbaji out & play devil's advocate, but where's the crime? The oven wasn't on, & at five weeks the kids unable to turn over, let alone figure out how to turn it on.

Both parents being wasted was more of a danger to the kid than the oven.

Leave the oven alone!

Some of the kids I see walking around I feel sorry for just because of the parents they are attached to.

Police arrested Long and charged him with first degree wanton endangerment. He is being held on bail of $10,000.

Quote:
A person is guilty of wanton endangerment in the first degree when, under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life, he wantonly engages in conduct which creates a substantial danger of death or serious physical injury to another person.

Whether he's actually guilty or not is a different thing.

I can see at least two things that could be a problem.

One, I can totally imagine someone getting up hungover the next morning and turning the oven on without thinking about it.

Two, this is Kentucky. I don't imagine the oven was very clean.

Of course, as you pointed out, the oven doesn't really matter so much as how pissed drunk they got while caring for a five-week-old kid.

OMG here comes the Chili song.

I want my babyback, babyback, babyback ribs. ...and on St. Pattys day!

There were a bunch of people complaining about a nasty chemical odor in our building this morning. We tracked it down to the cabbage and corn beef cooking in the cafeteria downstairs.

Also, if the door is closed and/or the oven is gas operated asphyxiation is a real possibility.

Probably not a good habit to get in to.

The counter is: Was that a worse place to put the baby in than other options available at the time? Would the kid have been better off on the floor, competing with fast food bags, spilled bong water, cigarette butts, and empty beer cans? Or perhaps the ideal location would be wedged in between two half empty cases of Budweiser cleverly placed on the coffee table? I've seen some pretty filthy living environments before (yes, some with children around). It would absolutely not shock me if it turned out that setting a bassinet on a rack in an open oven might just be the cleanest and safest place for the baby to sleep.
