I'm headed to Kuala Lumpur and Dubai for business. Besides the Petronas towers and the Burj Kalifa, any places that I need to go/see? Any specific food I should be on the lookout for? Any fun cultural things that you think I should experience?

The entire point of asking the forum community was to avoid doing my own research, noob.

When entering Dubai, try dropping a couple Hebrew words into your vocabulary just to keep things lively.

Congratulations on being sent to 2 cities that have nothing in common with the rest of the country that they are situated in.

Bearing that in mind, I would reccomend Starbucks and McDonalds as places that will keep you feeling that you arn't in countries that are full of muzzie suicide bombers who hate everything about you.

Have fun!

The first time I went to Malaysia, I forgot to drink loads of water and got constipated. I didnt take a dump for 8 days. When I did, not only did I squeeze out a cable that would have stretched across the English Channel, I also popped out my one and only ever haemmarroid! It was so painful that i was stranded in a little place on the east coast for 4 days cos it was too painfull to sit on a bus.

After that I met a British diplomat and his wife in a bar and I spent the next three days at his somewhat palatial residence watching the 1990 World Cup and got roaring drunk during of the final between germany and Argentina.

I cant remember who won.

Drink loads of water. Avoid piles.

You will thank me.

No recommendations here, having never visited either of those places. I don't envy you Dubai, but I would be curious about Kuala Lumpur.

Kuala lumpur has a massive Aviary if you like birds that is said to be pretty impressive. Not so much if you dislike birds I suppose. They also have a fairly famous pewter casting foundry that gives guided tours. Royal senglor foundary or something like that. For food, Hopefully you like Kabobs and bean based items.

Actually, I think the bean based stuff and kebabs are mostly going to be found in Dubai. The ME is the place for goat on a stick and fuul (bean stew).

KL on the other hand has great food. Thai, Chinese, Malaysian and Indonesian are all excellent. Especially try and find somewhere doing 'Steamboat'. Its a massive dish of thinly sliced raw ingredients (fish, meat, veggies, noodles etc) that you cook yourself at the table in various simmering soups. But the real highlight of eating in Malaysia is Indian. I've spent more time than I care to remeber in India itself and have never had Indian food as good as I had it in Malaysia. Particularly good are the Thali style meals served on a banana leaf. Street food is the best and cheapest

I wish it was like that around here. Instead when you come across someone serving food on the street corner, it is a good idea to avoid it. That is of course if you want your bowel movements to remain solid and reliable. Anywho.... I have no advice for you Demea. :( Good luck with your trip and I hope you enjoy yourself and get to experience the best food you can find. :D

West Germany won 1-0, thanks to a penalty from Andreas Brehme. I never liked the West Germans at football, but Argentina had a team full of cheating, diving, whining gits, so I'm glad they lost.

It's a long flight, so don't forget to grab a poppyseed bagel or two at the airport to snack on before you leave.

There are lots of interesting things to see around both cities. You won't see them. Your experience, largely by necessity of course, will be safe and controlled and entirely similar to a theme park in Orlando dedicated to either nation. I'd bring a tee shirt with large pictures of Mohamed on both sides, just to be amused by the polite explanations of why I might want to remove it.

Make it that picture of Mo' with a bomb-turban for extra lulz.

Coincidentally, there was a story in today's Sun-Times about visiting Dubai and it mentions that, although the Burj Khalifa is much taller than the Sears Tower, its current observation deck is only a little more than halfway up the building, a mere 30' higher than the observation level in the local Tower. Of course, the view is different but I thought that was kind of odd.

Ah, here's the article minus the swanky graphic showing the observation floors.

The business lounge in the Dubai airport is pretty nice. Saw a few people in the full-on traditional dress walking through the terminal, but I also saw several arab women in jeans, t-shirts, sandals and no head scarf.

Another 5 hours before our plane to KL takes off. I've already spent 14 hours on airplanes today, with another 7 to come before this leg is finished. Shoot me now.

And that's why Moe says "f'uck you!" anytime someone says "Hey, why don't you go check out what they're doing in India?"

That reminds me of our flights to Peru from Saudi back when I was a kid, with stopovers in Germany and France. Ahh, I loved long flights. Lufthansa had the best swag.

This country is fúcking HOT. About 95F, humid, and sunny. And this is their winter season (although they're so close to the equator, I doubt it changes much).

It's very green, and the people are an interesting mix of Han Chinese, Indian sub-continent, and southeast Asian. I've even seen a few whities roaming the streets!

Kuala Lumpur airport is pretty interesting. They cut down a forest to build it, but left a fet trees which are now in the middle of the airport building. Supposedly its haunted by the spirits of the trees...

This.. We got drenched from sweat/moisture just walking from building to building. I'd imagine it takes a while to get used to.

Poverty and wealth go hand in hand, not 100m from the Petronas towers is a whole area of slums, and the nastiest looking river. Big contrasts that they don't show in the brochures.

If you want a cheaper alternative to the Petronas towers (since they only allow a set number of peeople per day go up, and you only go up halfway) there is another veiwing platform a walk away. LINK

The main thing that stick out in my mind about the whole trip is the motorbikes. There are thousands of the things. Every set of traffic lights has about 50 little scooters bunched at the front waiting, and when the lights go green, don't be in the way, they won't stop. One motorbike is transport for the whole family. Mum, Dad, couple kids, and a couple chickens..

The hotel we stayed at had the best buffet breakfast, but I couldn't tell you the name of the hotel.
