Ok I never want to pay for phone service again. Does magic jack really do it? Does it tell me to cancel my service and thereby not pay, or is it a big scam?

Why don't you give it a try? It looks like they have a free trial offer.

Actually, why don't just get a cell phone and join the rest of us, you Luddite you Smiley: sly

We could always try to get Comcast to lower our bill while adding phone to the account.

Not about to go with Verizon until they realize City folk use Broadband too.

I've been using Vonage for a few years now. It's twenty bucks a month - we pay an additional 5 for an 800 number. So, the daily calls to and from family all over the country don't cost anything more.

I might have to check out Skype and see if it can provide everything.

Sounds like internet/computer based cellphone calls will soon be available. That's gonna be a blow to the carriers.

Eh, they probably want to phase out landlines and have everyone switch to mobile phones.

Here's the deal about Magic Jack:

Basically, for the $15 or whatever you pay, you sell over your computer and any information on your computer to their company. For Magic Jack to work, your computer has to be constantly running, and Magic Jack is constantly running background programs that eat up GOBS of memory and collect your information like any good company that makes money based on advertising. Also, the program comes with no uninstall, so getting the program off of your computer (if you want to) is near impossible. According to the wiki article I just checked, they just recently released an uninstaller for Windows that can be found on their website, but if you have a Mac, that thing is on there forever.

If you're still interested, I'd also do more research to see if it's even available where you live. A quick google showed lots of complaining customers about how there were no area codes available in their area, and apparently on top of everything else the product is nearly impossible to return during its 30-day warranty.

We don't have a land line anymore, we just use our cell phones. But the last time we had a land line, we used Vonage. Like Elinda was saying, it's a good company, nothing to install on your computer, you just have to use their router. If I had to use a line phone again, I'd go with them.

I have been considering droping the land line. Its just that I have had the number for 20 years now.
I am going to call verizon to see what their cheapest phone plan is.

We've had magic jack for about 2 years now. The quality is not that great but for the price, we think its worth it since we mainly use our cell phones.

All we use it for is when we have to give our phone numbers out and don't want say, utility companies, credit cards or such, to call our cell phones. All voicemails are emailed to us and we filter calls that way.

We have it plugged in the computer but the usb attachment is unplugged unless we want to make or receive a call. The program does not run when the usb box is not plugged in.

We had vonage for over a year and the quality was the same as magic jack. But since it was a monthly bill and we never really used it, we opted for magic jack. Both brands had bad reception at times.

So if you want to use it as a main phone, I wouldn't recommend it. Like I said, we only use it to filter calls or for emergency if we have no cell phone reception.

Good luck in deciding,

Izkare

Poisoned steak, then give him the antidote if he agrees to dump the land line.
