Powerful earthquake rattles Chile
February 27, 2010 2:54 a.m. EST

Magnitude 8.3 quake jolts central Chile, according to U.S. Geological Survey

Tsunami warning has been issued for Chile, Peru

Parts of Santiago, Chile, are without electricity

U.S. Geological Survey
(CNN) -- An magnitude 8.3 earthquake struck central Chile early Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake's epicenter was located near the town of Concepcion, 212 miles (341 kilometers) from the capital, Santiago.

A tsunami warning was issued for Chile and Peru, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours," the National Weather Service said in a statement.

Alessandro Perez, who is staying at the Santiago Marriott Hotel, reported shattered glass, but there was no structural damage. No one at the hotel was injured, he said.

Anita Herrera, who works at the Hotel Kennedy in Santiago, said electricity was out at that hotel and guests were nervous.

"Our hotel is built for this," she said. "In Chile, this happens many times."

Chile holds the record for the largest earthquake in the world, according to the USGS. A magnitude 9.5 quake struck the South American country in May 1960 and killed 1,655 people.

Actually yes. My dorm-mate and good friend from my freshman year in college lives in Chile. Where in Chile I have no idea. That's pretty damn scary, I don't even think I've heard of an 8 earthquake occurring before. At least not in my recollection. And so soon after the one in Haiti too...

I just checked her facebook page to see if she's okay, she lives in Santiago.

CNN is now reporting that it was an 8.8 quake.

The latest CNN article:

Quote:
(CNN) -- At least six people are dead after a massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck central Chile early Saturday, according to government officials.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located near the city of Concepcion, 212 miles (341 kilometers) from the capital of Santiago. The quake struck at 3:34 a.m. (1:34 a.m. ET).

Concepcion is Chile's second largest city with a population of 200,000. There are reports of collapsed buildings in Santiago. The quake was felt in several Chilean towns and in parts of Argentina as well.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for Chile and Peru. A tsunami watch has been issued for Ecuador, Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica. The center recorded a tsunami wave as high as 9 feet.

"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours," the National Weather Service said in a statement.

Officials hoped to learn more about the devastation in the morning.

Santiago resident Leo Perioto jumped out of his bed in his apartment at the top of a six-story building.

"The whole building was shaking," he said. "The windows were wobbling a lot. We could feel the walls moving from side to side."

Alessandro Perez, who is staying at the Santiago Marriott Hotel, reported shattered windows, but there was no structural damage. No one at the hotel was injured, he said.

Anita Herrera, who works at the Hotel Kennedy in Santiago, said electricity was knocked out at that hotel and guests were nervous.

"Our hotel is built for this," she said. "In Chile, this happens many times."

Chile holds the record for the largest earthquake in the world, according to the USGS. A magnitude 9.5 quake struck the South American country in May 1960 and killed 1,655 people.

In Lima we got earthquakes (little ones) with the changing of the seasons, but they were always in the 2's and 3's and most buildings are built to withstand it. The biggest I was in was a 4.8, I think, and that was scary. The problem is not everyone can afford decent housing or repair to older homes, so you get a lot of damage to the houses built out of mud bricks and adobe and such.

I thought more of Pikko with the tsunami warnings for Hawaii. She's fine so far and keeping track of her family.

San Diego's tsunami tidal surge has hit here. From all reports, nothing damaged, no injuries. But probably a lot of happy surfers.

Using a complex model, he and fellow scientists came up with a preliminary calculation that the quake should have shortened the length of an Earth day by about 1.26 microseconds (a microsecond is one millionth of a second).
Sweet. Less time at work. Thanks, Chile!

Yeah one of my good friends has been travelling through South America with his girlfriend and they were in Chile for their first full day while this happened. Scary stuff but they were safe.
