Too black and white, dear Guenny. Wild bears in circus with a funny hat riding a bycicle don't create "awareness", nor do they have any kind of scientific value. It's pure entertainement. And it's pure fucked-up.

the few, tortured beasts that have been sacrificed to the public eye have done unmeasurable amounts of good for their wild brethren.

Debatable.

What's not debatable is that there are lots of ways to create awareness and raise scientific understanding without torturing anything. To be honest, and I'm hoping Moe won't read this, the US is the world leader in creating these kinds of environments.

Do they still have bears riding unicycles in the circus? Forgive my ignorance, but I'd hope that's fallen out of favor. Still, though, how can you say that a 5 year old watching that majestic grizzly ride around the three-ring wasn't mesmerized and motivated to become a conversationalist?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that, especially in modern times, in America, that most people who work with wild animals do it because they love the animals, not because they want to exploit them. I'm not saying that there's not someone higher up doing the exploiting, but the people who actually work in close proximity with them really do it because they love them and want to create awareness. There are bigger battles to fight for animals rights protection than Sea World and zoos. You might be a bit closer with the circus, though.

To Sea Worlds credit, it did originate as a research institute and does still 'rescue' injured or stranded sea life.

Now however, I think it's all done for the entertainment value. If there is any research going on it's secondary to, or for enhancing, profit.

I don't see any majesty, nor gain much understanding of the beast by watching it swim around a pool with a sexy, swim-suit clad woman standing on it's nose.

They still do quite a bit of research both on premise and funding remote projects. What they do at the parks is primarily for entertainment, but you know what? Someone has to pay for the science. At least they're doing it on their own and not asking me for a handout via my tax dollars.

Aside from acoustics and echolocation, there's just not a lot to be learned from captive animals at this point.

Well, I suppose we can add aggressive / potentially dangerous play behavior to that, but it's going to be hard to get volunteers to do any testing at this point.

And your racist friend
I know politics bore you
But I feel like a hypocrite talking to you
And your racist friend

It was the loveliest party that I've ever attended
If anything was broken I'm sure it could be mended
My head can't tolerate this bobbing and pretending
Listen to some bullet-head and the madness that he's saying

This is where the party ends
I'll just sit here wondering how you
Can stand by your racist friend
I know politics bore you
But I feel like a hypocrite talking to you
You and your racist friend

This is where the party ends
I can't stand here listening to you
And your racist friend
I know politics bore you
But I feel like a hypocrite talking to you
And your racist friend

Out from the kitchen to the bedroom to the hallway
Your friend apologizes, he could see it my way
He let the contents of the bottle do the thinking
Can't shake the devil's hand and say you're only kidding

This is where the party ends
I can't stand here listening to you
And your racist friend

But I feel like a hypocrite talking to you
And your racist friend

[quote=Elinda Should we have large wild animals in captivity simply for our entertainment? Can we predict, with enough surety, the actions of a killer animal in captivity?

[/quote]

For me, it is not the size but the intelligence and if we can provide a stimulating enough environment. In the case of the killer whales, they are clearly intelligent enough to require a serious regard for their needs, and it is clear we cannot provide for them. From what I understand, gorillas and dolphins, which are vastly smaller, suffer a similar fate. Just because we can doesn't mean we should.

"Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell’s heart I stab at thee; for hate’s sake I spit my last breath at thee. Sink all coffins and all hearses to one common pool! and since neither can be mine, let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing thee, though tied to thee, thou damned whale! Thus, I give up the spear!"
