Google bosses convicted in Italy

Quote:
An Italian court has convicted three Google executives in a trial over a video showing an autistic teenager being bullied.

The Google employees were accused of breaking Italian law by allowing the video to be posted online.

Judge Oscar Magi absolved the three of defamation but convicted them of privacy violations.

Quote:
"If individuals like myself and my Google colleagues who had nothing to do with the harassing incident, its filming or its uploading onto Google Video can be held criminally liable solely by virtue of our position at Google, every employee of any internet hosting service faces similar liability," he added.

This worries me. It worries me that a court can be so out of touch with reality that it can pass a judgment like this. To my mind, its equivalent to convicting the UK government of crimes committed using the M25 simply because the UK government provides the road.
Maybe we should charge airlines with drug trafficing offenses when a passenger is caught smuggling?

Common sense clearly went out the window in the Italian court ...

Google's lawyers said that the video was removed as soon as it was brought to its attention and that the firm also provided information on who posted it.

As a result four students were expelled from their school in Turin, northern Italy.
Well, it's obvious why they chose to sue Google instead of four students' parents from Turin. The entire thing is ludicrous. I'd be amazed if it isn't overturned on appeal.

I suppose they're trying to make the owners accountable for the content, but obviously that's impossible.

It's Italy. Their courts aren't fond of much of anything American. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see this confirmed.

If I thought this would change Googles practices domestically, it might worry me, but, even if this is upheld I don' think it will impact the way Google does business here.

Seems this is in conjunction with the decree that's been drafted that would give the government control over on-line video content.

Quote:
In a country where Internet usage is still relatively small, the measure is seen as an attempt by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to protect his TV empire from future competition from the freewheeling world of Google and YouTube.

Google could probably buy Italy, so yes it'll be overturned on appeal.

As long as you're not Turkish, Greek islands are pretty much constantly on sale.
