93 million americans lack broadband? wth?

Quote:
A new study from the US Federal Communications Commission says that 93 million Americans don't have broadband internet access at home.

Most non-adopters cite "affordability and lack of digital skills" as the reasons for not steering themselves into the fast lane of the information superhighway, but many fear or are disgusted by the web. And millions just don't care.

What on earth. 93 million? I did not realise you were breeding a generation fit the previous century over there. Or are these Yankees just scared of joining the internet and finding out that there is a world outside the US borders Smiley: tongue

A choice quote

Quote:
Millions of Americans don't care, don't want broadband, don't want to pay for it, and find the internet either offensive or dangerous. ®

I thought that was the attitude of Austalian politicians?

Huh. It says that 60 million (out of 304 million or a little under 20%) don't use the internet at all. I'd have guessed that number higher.

That's why I like living out here in the wildlands, where most houses are greater than g-range apart.

With an area spanning (according to quick wiki check) of roughly 3.8 million square miles VS England spanning only a bit over 50,000 square miles, it seems like a very reasonable number to not have access to broadband. Comparing populations to area, your country would have to be roughly 12 times larger to be comparable.

As stated earlier, infrastructure improvements are expensive plus they provide little overall reward for the companies funding them.

We also have a lot of old people who wouldn't know what an internet was if they tripped over it.

I refute that claim. Annabella is proof of older American people using the internet.
I guess Nobby makes the same claim for the UK.

I don't think Anna's quite as old as the memes would have you believe.

But either way, for every story of an older person who uses the net, you have stories like that of my maternal grandmother. About eight years ago, we bought a cumputer for my grandfather, who had just taken a learning course on how to do simple things like email(for keeping in touch with his grandkids) and checking sports scores, as a Christmas gift. My grandmother made him throw it in the garbage. Fast forward to about two years ago. My mom and her sisters chipped in and bought my grandparents a 32" flat screen TV for Christmas. As soon as they opened it, the first words out of my Grandmother's mouth were "That better not be a computer. If it is you can just take it back right now."

For every badass net granny out there, there are people who not only don't use the internet, but actively rail against it.

Yeah, it was probably the fact that you also referenced Nobby that threw me off. You can't be joking when you call him old. Smiley: wink

I wanna know where the complaint is, really. With the f'ucknuts we already have on the interwebs, are we convinced that adding more would be positive?

I mean, really, taking this board as evidence we have a huge percentage of people that add the perspective of someone only marginally able to get through the brain function necessary for a deep breath. Would adding people who, to this point, have recognized their deficiencies and stayed away be a good thing?

There are around 50 million people over the age of 60, ~35million of them 70+. There are another 40 or so million officially living below the poverty line at any given time.

I don't find this number surprising in the least. Nor do I think it means what you think it means, but I'm really not sure what you mean.

That and knock off another 33 million for people who have access to the net, just not "broadband internet access at home". So they use dial-up or libraries, schools, whatever.

Not to mention the millions that just leach off their neighbors wireless.

My in-laws wouldn't mind broadband access, but they're too rural to have any access besides satellite.
