This is probably one of the coolest things I've read in a while.

Brian Mckeever will be the first athlete to compete in both the regular Olympics and the Paralympics. He's legally blind, having basically only some peripheral vision left. He's actually already had success in world championships, finishing 21st.

I got the link from a wiki about him. I don't know which link at the bottom had this, but one of the other skiers said it's pretty hard to be uninspired or give up for the other people on the ski team. Smiley: grin

That's one of those stories where it would almost be cool for the others to "slow down" and give him a real shot. But knowing someone like him, that wouldn't suffice anyway. Best of luck to him, and yeah, that's pretty damn inspiring.

Shows what you know. Lifetime movies are about B-list starlets playing abused wives who kill/are killed by their husbands/boyfriends but then find true love and are saved by the town doctor/sheriff.

Yes, let's all just humor the disabled people and treat them differently, Stubs. Smiley: oyvey I think you missed the point entirely.

I wonder what it must literally feel like for him, assuming his other senses are heightened without the sense of sight. They say he has to memorize the track! I wonder how does one distinguish between blurs? I would love to see him make a painting and get a glimpse of what the world is like through his eyes.

What about the black widow home nurses who kill off their patients' family members one by one until they are revealed and taken down by the black-sheep daughter who returns to the family homestead after twenty years absence?

My wife watches too much Lifetime

I'm not sure I agree with him competing in both the Olympics and the Paralympics. Pick one.

I see the two as being independent, he is disabled and there for qualified for the Paralympics but on the other hand he has proven himself to be good enough to compete with those without some form of disability. I would say he has earned his place in the Olympics.

I agree I think all Canadian Olympians should be able to compete in the Paralympics. It's only fair. Maybe then they'll own the podium.

Wow, it'd be terrible to be legally blind and have a tiny, marginal, disadvantage in fucking cross country skiing. When he qualifies in Biathalon, I'll start caring. Being legally blind here is about as much of a hardship as a bad haircut.

I've not seen much of the Olympics, but the coverage I have seen has consisted of Curlers crying and figure skaters, errrm....crying.

Seemsall a bit crap tbh. But blind skiers should definately get more airtime for sure.

Hmmm, it's like that one South African runner who is missing both his legs, yet still runs faster than most people with two legs. He has not been permitted to run in non-Paralympic races, because the stilty things he runs on apparently give him an edge over people who actually have legs. They're bouncy, lightweight, and allow him to swing his thighs faster.

I guess they couldn't make that same argument against a skier who is blind.

Nah, I think you just misunderstood what I was saying for the sake of argument. That's cool though.

Nah, they should just get automatic bids to the special olympics. Then they could come through on that winning the medal count goal.
