Newly elected senator Scott Brown (R-Mass) broke ranks with the GOP to defeat a filibuster against the jobs bill (along with four other GOP senators). Reaction ranges from "He'll be a level-headed moderate" to "He's a traitorous RINO!" to "He's building cover to obstruct other bills".
What do YOU think?
He's showing his moderate, nonpartisan streak and I like it:21 (50.0%)
I'm disappointed in his betrayal of the GOP:3 (7.1%)
It's a trap! Now he can fall back on this vote to validate obstructionism:18 (42.9%)
Total:42

I'm an optimist, against all the evidence. Smiley: grin

I'm just not very good at unfamiliar smilies.

You obviously need to smile more, Sunshine.

Nate Silver tends to agree with you although I'm more inclined to agree with Admiral Ackbar.

Of course, one can reasonably ask why this bill -- which is supported by something like 70 and 80 percent of the public -- received only five Republican votes for cloture and not more.

Well, I agree with ol' Nate, as well.

He's new to this. He still thinks he's actually there to help the people.

Who knows. Maybe he's not super partisan yet... but I think it's just to obstruct later. Boooo, pessimism!

Once he comes to his senses he'll fall into the GOP line.

The optimist in me wants to think he's one of a new breed of politicians that actually wants to get something accomplished.

Either this, or he's savvy enough to know he needs to veer to the middle if he has any shot of re-election in 2012.

He ran as an anti-status-quo candidate more than a thoroughbred Republican largely because the Democrats had already fielded a (IMO terrible) candidate and the Democrats now represent "business as usual" in DC. He is and always has been more of an Independent than a Republican. The one most important issue he identifies with is fiscal conservatism, which USED to be a Republican position.

There is nothing about him that I can find that would indicate he is anything other than a strong-minded Independent, although I would like to learn more about him.

I'm gonna have to actually look at this bill before I can make a decision on how I feel about what he did.
