So, in all seriousness, what the hell was going through Stevie Y's head when he picked Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau from the Sharks? Those two haven't had a decent playoff performance in the last few years. Tonight they were -1 with 7 shots between them. Marleau took six shots and couldn't get one to go.

My real treat for the night was the little giddy giggle that went off deep inside me every time Crosby got dumped. -3 on the night, would have been -4 had that limp wristed ice level redirect not squeaked between Miller's legs.

Anyone check to see if there's a $1 US at center ice?

Good game, too bad about the result.

Brodeur was less than stellar, but the first two US goals were greasy as f*ck. Yes Moe, 'tis true; a team can ride a hot goalie quite a way and the US did that last night. Miller was outstanding. Overall, I thought the Canadians brought it, they simply couldn't work out Miller. The US was outshot 45-23 so I can't say Canada didn't try. There does seems to be something lacking with this Canadian line-up but I hope they can get it together and at least make the medal games.

The Russia/Czech Republic game was great yesterday too. Some fantastic hockey in Vancouver! :)

I was only able to see that game due to the time difference, but it was pretty awesome. Russia looks **** hot. Some of those goals yesterday were pretty sick.

Eh, it's not a big deal to beat Canada. It's like beating California or Luxembourg.

In hockey? It's not a big deal to beat Canada in hockey?

If it were, I dunno, basketball or baseball I'd see what you mean; but hockey?

Can't agree.

It was a fun game to watch.

I'm a bit sad for the Canucks. They're such nice peeps and all.

Even though they were playing at the arena formerly known as General Motors Place, it was all of Canada, not the Canucks last night.

By the way, I'm a HUGE Minnesota Wild fan. That being the case, I'm of the opinion that if the Vancouver Canucks plane were to crash and the entire team actually died in a fire I would be ok with it.

How the f'uck am I supposed to now accept Ryan Kesler in to my heart's fuzzy place?

This article encapsulates my feelings about it:

Re: the reason that the game was on MSNBC as opposed to NBC:
Quote:
But everyone knows the real reason why NBC is acting like nobody in America gives a **** about hockey: Nobody in America gives a **** about hockey. In fact, hiding an important hockey game in the upper reaches of the channel lineup was the most patriotic thing NBC could do. Not caring about hockey is a cherished American tradition, up there with starting to follow baseball right before the playoffs and being vaguely aware of how your alma mater is doing in the NCAA tournament. Ever since early man fashioned mammoth tusks into hockey sticks and pushed a primitive puck across the ice, America has rolled its eyes and turned the other way. Plus, think of how much sweeter the victory is, knowing that 95% of Canada was desperately willing their team to victory, while most Americans browsed the Internet with one eye on USA's Pirates of the Caribbean marathon—and our team still won!

We have the depth to field 3 competitive teams, theoretically.

As for Anna's link, I'm sure the US feels the same about any sport at the Olympics, so it's kind of a dumb assertion.

What's your point? How does that make it any less impressive that the underdogs won a game against a stacked favorite?

Eh, the whole underdog trope always seems boring when it's the USA. I enjoy it more when it is like Puerto Rico beating the US in Basketball or something like they did in 2004, even though it's weird that Puerto Rico has its own Olympic team. We're not really the underdog in anything but maybe math.

About as much as you seem invested in downplaying the outcome of last night's game.

I was hating the US before it was cool.
