OFT clears path for Google to take on estate agents

Quote:
he consumer watchdog today recommended relaxing rules for new entrants such as Google and Tesco to offer rival property search websites that will compete with traditional estate agents.

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) said that allowing new companies to set up search portals regulation-free would "shake up" the traditional estate agency model, resulting in better choice and lower prices.

Google is widely expected to launch a property search website as soon as this year, and Tesco tried in 2007 to launch a property finder online service that charged sellers a flat fee of £199, before shutting it down, partly because of the burden of regulation

I would love to see how this works out. I bought my flat after I found it on an estate agents website. The estate agent was excellent but the web was definitely my primary method to find a property.

I'm just not sure Google is the right company to be involved in selling houses .... Smiley: dubious

I can't think of a single scenario where Google could prove itself less competent or more fraudulent than any of the 36 millione state agents we have in this bloody country. In fact, I'm willing to bet that if Google took a serious stab at this, they would make half of the estate agencies in the UK go bust. Which, in all fiarness, wouldn't be a bad thing.

Anyway, all of this is irrelevant since Google are not going to be "selling houses".

This. I'm all for healthy competition, but I don't know if I can stand any more job loss.

Job losses suck, but so do estate agents. I'm thinking they cancel each other out.

MLS or whatever they call it now, is fucking horrendous to use. I think real estate agents should pay Google to list their properties there and then let google be their search engine.
