Oh, Spring!Follow

Once again I find myself in a familiar place as the first genuine sign of spring appears. Once again, I will subject you all to a brief missive on the hope that accompanies this glorious day.

What is it about the sound of duffels hitting lockers in the age old ritual of a battlefield general reporting for duty that inspires such hope? Is it simply the longing for a long summer afternoon spent bathed in sunlight, taking in the epic confrontation playing out before me? Is it the promise of a clean slate with nothing but optimism to accompany the final stanzas of The Star Spangled Banner? Or is it the prospect of more hours of truly quality time imparting, with vivid object lessons, the truths my father shared with me in similar settings?

The grass hasn't even begun to dream of shedding it's wintry blanket in the northern climes, and yet the unmistakable voice of the worn stitches on that old horsehide begins calling out. The desire to once again smell oil and new leather, to feel a sturdy piece of maple in my hands becomes overwhelming.

Pitchers and catchers reported today, boys and girls. Everything that is wrong with the world seems just a bit less important today, as hope springs eternal.

Happy Spring.

I too have noticed that the air is beginning to smell wet instead of frozen, and that birds seem to be singing a bit more cheerily. And even though our meteorologist has predicted several days of snow over the next week, I suspect that spring is not far off, and that I may soon be able to hang up my coat and hat and gloves for another several months.

Well, he is talking about a bunch of guys running around in tight pants swinging around their big sticks and trying to catch balls on their chin. Hell, he even mentioned pitchers and catchers.

It's not showing any signs of becoming spring around here. Yeah, it's supposed to *maybe* get up to 50 on Saturday, but that's the high we usually see around here but haven't this year because it's been so goddamn cold. We'll have 1-2 more little snows here first, then we might noticed it warming up around the end of march.

Yes I am a meteorologist.

I got a bad cold. I think I'll dub it my springtime cold. I had to take a day off from work yesterday cuz I was spewing stuff - I washed some windows.

Also my woodpile is getting down to the last couple rows.

Summer can't really be that big a deal when spring, autumn and winter are all the same thing.

Well summer is in it's own category compared to the other three. Winter isnt a big deal, which used to be my arch nemesis. Summer though? O-U-C-H

and yet still a lot less humid than back north

The snow ad ice is melting off our roof and window stills and the bird outside doesn't sound like it's begging for some food, since the ice has melted off the Holly berries.

Still they forecast some snow next week, but at least over the next 2 days some of the snow that blankets everything around here. Jonwin even jokes we will need to put the a/c in the windows since it's suppose to get over 40.

My winter here this year has been much better than it would have been in Virginia, and summers are always nicer as well. As I type this I'm hanging out the window of my office, which is overheated to 81 degrees since it's a balmy 36 degrees out today.

You have inspired me to put on my ickle bobble-hat, my parka with gloves hanging from string through the sleeves, and Thomas the Tank Engine wellies.

Alternatively, I might sit watching Masterchef and get quietly sozzled Smiley: boozing

We still have about two and a half feet worth of snow from "Snowmageddon." Still, it's sunny and I'm gonna trudge up to Haverford and watch a classmate lecture and introduce a film. At least it's not snowing.
