Well, the Church does appropriate funds for the wealth of those in its upper tiers, but it is a voluntary donation, so I guess it's different.

Well, the Church does appropriate funds for the wealth of those in its upper tiers, but it is a voluntary donation, so I guess it's different.
Both are voluntary. You just end up in different hell equivalencies if you don't.

Not exactly fond of either, but Catholicism doesn't have billion-year contracts where you sign your life away to be on some weird private navy.

I thought giving your immortal soul to Jesus was a longer contract than a billion years.
That, and the 5% tithe was typically prescribed as the amount to be given for salvation. Not in more moderate modern congregations, to be sure. And heck, Indulgences are analogous to Auditing in function if not form.

In the past, there were indulgences and compulsory tithes, but I only really care about the similarities in the context of modern times. Catholicism may be goofy sky fairy stories, but at least there's the excuse of them being culturally prescribed. Scientologist celebrities believe plane-rocket stories without any childhood interference.
