Was reading through The Onion the other day and I came across a topic that intrigued me. Do you have anything you used to just go apenuts over/be crazy into that leaves you cold now?
I did go through an unfortunate boy-band phase from 13-15ish but I'll still kill some "Hangin' Tough" on karaoke, so I don't think that counts.
Come to think I used to dig a good Baz Luhrmann (sp?) flick. Loved everything up through Moulin Rouge, but Australia was kind of a disappointment. Same with Disney. Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast? Awesome, went to all 3 opening night and I wasn't even the target audience. Then came The Hunchback of Notre Dame and I never looked back.
Oh and I used to think both Sean Connery and Mel Gibson were talented dreamboats but now I think they're both grade-A douchenozzles.

I used to really like Matthew Mcconaughey for his laid back semi-nudity and his bongo playing. Now he's just too Matt Mcconaughey for my tastes. He's all conflated in my head with Lance Armstrong and Jack Johnston as blandly douchey outdoorsy men. I liked Katie Holmes before she married Tom Cruise. There was a time I liked Lars Von Trier movies until I watched Dancer in the Dark and though, "WTF, Lars?"

Oh and I feel about Michael Douglas the way that Flea feels about Sean Connery.

I've gone through a lot of "phases." I think it's just growing up. It doesn't stop when you hit your 20s, you know.

Music: I used to love Dispatch; these days I really can't enjoy their music at all. Every time it comes up on my mp3 player I skip it. Same with the comedic songs by Stephen Lynch; I LOVED those in high school. Not any more; "If I were gay" is still funny, but after hearing it the 500th time, I'm over it.

Anime: I was huge into anime in high school, it faded in college, and now I don't watch it... at all. Well, except for Higurashi No Naku Horo Ni. But that's because I loved the manga but couldn't find it anywhere.

Videogames: Ever since I found MMOs, regular RPGs leave me cold. Although Dragon Age is pretty awesome, but I likely won't replay it.

Books: Used to love fantasy, horror, and suspense mysteries. Oh wait, I still do. Hm.

I used to own every Pink Floyd album, posters, shirts, concert videos (and The Wall of course), had their band biography, even the more terrible solo albums like "The Pros & Cons of Hitchhiking" and Gilmour's self-titled one with "Raise My Rent" on it.

Now I occasionally hear a song on the radio and think "I should put some Floyd on my MP3 player" but never get around to it.

Seeing Zombieland this weekend reminded me that I thought Natural Born Killers was awesome for a couple years, watched it about five years later and was blindsided by how awful it actually is. Robert Downey Jr is still pretty good in it though. I need an edit with only his scenes.

Oh, God yes. I'd rate you up for that if I could.

For that matter, the Forgotten Realms novels.

A weird reverse is that when I was a kid and taking piano lessons I tolerated them, but now given the chance I really enjoy sitting down at the piano and playing something. Guess it's good I stuck it out with the lessons.

Add Tom Cruise and John Travolta to that list.

I used to really love Queen. I had all their albums and even loved the truly odd stuff they put out. Now I listen to them and I just can't for the life of me figure out what was so great about them. I mean, I still like a few of their songs, but I just can't get into them the way I used to.

Beck disappointed me. I used to like his music then he revealed his scientologist beliefs and his Ribisi-Scientologist wife and now he just seems that brand of forced scientologist-like quirkiness, much like Jenna Elfman.

Also, I second Joph on Natural Born Killers. I'll add to that my feelings about Nine Inch Nails. I used to really like them and now, Trent Reznor's whole thing irritates me.

Forgot about him. I wasn't so totally into him but my NIN CDs are resting comfortably under a 10+ year blanket of dust.

I tend to evaluate entertainers' work separately from their personal ****. I like Beck. I think there are some great actors and performers who are personally crazy and fUCked-up in all sorts of ways. I don't have to love them to admire their work, although obviously if I feel really strongly about not supporting them I'd boycott their movies/performances anyway.

As for things I used to be wild about and have since dropped... aside from stuff I just grew out of (candy, pretty boys, anything pink) I can't really think of any.

Oh, I don't necessarily think it's good for me to hate Beck. I just find his scientology beliefs so annoying, I can't help myself.

I'm assuming that's the issue people have with Travolta, because other than his creepy religion, I think he's a good guy and an entertaining actor (notice that doesn't say good actor)

For me it isn't the beliefs as much as the inability to suspend disbelief and think you're a down-and-out cop with a heart of gold when your mugshot and racial slurs are so easily accessed in my memory.

You know, that's an interesting point. I think one of the reasons I've always loved reading, and reading fantasy and alternate-world history in particular, is that I have no problem at all suspending belief.

I can ignore what I know and accept what the story requires me to accept at will.

The down side is that I am very susceptible to suggestion. Smiley: laugh
