Voices in Movies and on TV. Some are mesmerising.

Watching The Shawshank Redemption for the gazillionth time, it occurs to me that Morgan Freeman's voice-overs add so much. Without them, it would still be a good movie, but with the soothing, matter-of-fact tone of voice, this is possibly one of the key factors (subconsciously perhaps) why it's so often voted best movie evarr.

Others are predictable - James Earl Jones as Darth Wossname, Robert Shaw as the Shark catcher in Jaws.

Purely from a voice perspective, which actors stand out to you?
Well along these lines (going with 'mesmerising') the narrator from 300. Loved that voice.

Lots of memorables...too many to mention. Along the line of commanding, like James Earl Jones was teh king on the broken Island in the original Dr. Dolittle.

A couple of my favorite voices; Ira Glass of This American life, the radio dj from Northern Exposure.

I have a cold and am not googling.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty funny too.

Though it would have been even funnier if he'd smacked up Wah-wah Walters.

Agreed. Even as he stammered and sputtered trying to be dramatic I couldn't help but be entranced.

Speaking of Avery Brooks. I used to work with a woman who's husband was roommates with Avery Brooks in college. They ended up being best friends and Brooks was the best man at their wedding.

Yeah, that's my famous person story.

Kevin Grevioux has so incredibly low voice it's almost unpleasant to hear. For people not connecting him it's the big werewolf from Underworld. That voice wasn't edited, this is how he sounds IRL.

Morgan Freeman has amazing voice, I could recognize it anywhere. He can play with it like very few out there.

Ralph Fiennes has also some excellent voice skills. Forget Harry Potter, think "The Reader" or "The Constant Gardener". Both very narrative movies that just wouldn't be as good without him doing it.

I could also mention Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons and many more. Oddly enough I can't think of any female actresses at the moment.

Jeremy Irons as Scar in Lion King is the epitome of evil.

I'm pretty sure I've heard a voice over by Catherine Zeta Jones. I'm not 100% sure though, as it may have been a regular movie and I just tuned out as I was fantasizing about her.

You know what I think it is, really?

Young actresses are all being coached the same way, and they're all ending up with the same damn voice. It's slightly nasal, slightly sibilant, and the hard consonants like T are over-enunciated. Anna Kendrick is a prime example, mainly because I just saw Up in the Air recently. Her voice drives me crazy, it grates on my mid brain.

John Corbett, also of Big Fat Greek Wedding fame. I agree, he does have a good voice. And "Northern Exposure" was a great show! Until they got rid of the main character and replaced him.
