I've heard/read a couple stories now about the tidying-up that Vancouver has done in preparation of the Olympics that begin this weekend. This morning on the radio a community developer was being interviewed. The city has given up enough dough to fund 5 additional emergency shelters for the homeless.

Is it inevitable that the needy are at their neediest when the world is watching their community? What happens after the Olympics?

Anyway, I'll be tuned in Friday night. I love watching Ski-jumping, the Super-G, Bob-sledding and the 4-person Snowboarding race.

Is it possible that they expect the influx of visitors will displace more people than usual out of low-cost hostels, week-rate motels, etc and folks who just show up without a plan on where to stay?

Not that I think "get the bums off the streets before the cameras get here" isn't a factor but unless Vancouver is knee-deep in homeless, it seems like five extra shelters is an expectation of a lot of required housing.

I believe that they plan on turning the Olympic village residencies into low income housing.

That said, I know there are lots of people in Vancouver who believe that they can beat this 'homeless problem'... yeah, good luck with that.

***** Vancouver's homeless. If they lived in any other city in Canada, they'd freeze to death. They're living the good life as far as homeless goes.

Yeah, if I was gonna be homeless Vancouver would not be my first choice locale.

Breaking news, Captain Phil, the crab-boat captain of the Cornelia Marie of The Deadliest Catch fame, died from a stroke yesterday.

Only because you're not homeless in Canada. It's like the promised land up here. Free healthcare, lots of weed, some free fish for food and no snow. Realistically, it's probably better than being employed in some parts of the the continent.

Wasn't there some scandal in Beijing where they supposedly walled off some of the poorer sections of the city so the whole world wouldn't see their homeless and filth during the '08 Olympics?

To their credit, they do have experience building big walls.

In my stoned/hazed stupor, as I was re-reading your post I thought I saw

free weed

and my heart stopped, but

is still pretty good. At least that poor blonde skier chick won't have to overpay to get her poor bruised shin looked at. Smiley: crymore

The stuff really needs to be legalized so some criteria of quality can be designated and measured. It seems everywhere I visit on the internets these days, someone is claiming their weed is the best ever.

That's not a problem since the residents there think the sun shines out of their collective asses.

I live on the East Coast. Last time I checked, that wasn't anywhere near B.C. Also, I rarely smoke anymore as I just get sleepy.

What is really interesting is that the Harper govt is asking the SC to allow an appeal court on the safe injection sites in Vancouver.

Honestly they what they need to do is gather all the homeless up and take them up to Revelstoke in authentic Donner Party gear and then film that sh*t.

Londonc ertainly doesn't have the best stuff ever. The quality's been declining badly in the last 10 years or so.

It's hard to argue against Holland having "the best ever", since it's all completely legal. They cultivate herbs professionally, mix different plants together, grow it all in greenhouses by proper chemists and biologists, it's all perfectly clean and legit. You find everything you want, from the softest weed to the strongest skunk via the most mellow resin.

My best mate is getting married in June, and I'm organising a stag-do in The Hague. It's gonna be awesome.
