Not me. :P I'm not even 40 yet but my sister suddenly is pregnant at 43--totally unplanned and while she was using the pill. I find myself ruminating about it b/c I worry about her health. I could be totally wrong about the risks. She's really healthy--she's in better shape than alot of women 15 years younger than her. She had two easy births at 35 and 36 but still, I haven't met too many women who were 44 when they had a baby. Now, while I understand that most people here are under 40, I wonder if people know much about older pregnancies or women you know who have been in her situation.

We've had a baby boom here at my office of 40+ couples. One woman had twins at 44. They're 6 now. My sis had her last kid at 41.

With all the diagnostics available now, I hear it's pretty safe. I feel as though I could still pop out a kid ok, (48 and still bleeeeeding) but I sure don't want to.

She was pretty freaked out at first but I think they are ready to go for it. You know, sometimes what happens happens. But it's good to hear. It's been kind of a rollercoaster for her in the last two weeks and I'm gonna see her this weekend and I think we're just holding on until March when she has some more tests. I hope it turns out ok.

I thought this was going to be about the article from earlier this week linking increased chance of autism to babies born to women 40+, now I have nothing.

She didn't meet DSD's husband did she? Apparently he can make women ovulate through eye contact alone.

Did she mix up her morning sickness with a hot flash or something?

She's too young for menopause. Now I know you don't know your way around a ******, so I don't expect you to understand menstrual cycles but usually it comes about a decade later.

I had Noah at 35. That was late enough. It's not just about the pregnancy, it's having to deal with them when you're no longer 25. Gets tiring.

Given the subject matter, your title is funny.

Telling yourself that won't make your biological clock tick any slower.

She's far too skinny to be getting her period.

This is like the back and forth between DSD and myself, only from the Twilight Zone. The girl is smarter.

How odd.

There are more complications and more risks of genetic diseases past 40, but I was born when my mom was 39.5 and I kinda sorta came out okay.

(I was told that if I had been a downsball I'd have been aborted, and I'm totally okay with that.)

I understand your trepidation, Anna.

Merely by becoming pregnant, her risk of being murdered has increased dramatically. []

Smiley: mad

She lives in Maine, though. People only get murdered by their spouses there.

I dont know too much but I do know once you hit 35 the chance for Downes Syndrome increases quite a bit. So does the risk of multiples. Otherwise I cant think of anything else that changes. I agree with Nad though, it's not going to be the pregnancy that does her in but raising a child. If you figure she is 43 now, we'll round up and say she'll be 44 when the baby is born which means that when her child graduates high school (if on time) she will be around 62. Just thinking about dealing with a teenager in my late 50's makes me shudder.

That being said, it's not impossible. Tough road? Sure. But when is parenting not anyways? As long as she knows what she is getting into past the cute post newborn pre toddler stage and she's both ready and willing to raise a child, then she should be fine. She'll be giving up a lot. I just hope she understands how much and is ok with that

She'll have higher odds for birth defects, more testing to rule out the possibility of problems and probably a less comfortable pregnancy. I'm 36 and this pregnancy has been tougher by a mile than my first was 5 years ago.

Congrats!

Er... isn't that who usually kills pregnant women?

Not your brother in law specifically, but spouses in general.

Health risks go up the older you get, but there is no magic number past wich it all goes to pooh.

Theres lots of antenatal tests availiable to test for abnormalities and some of them are even quite accurate nowadays, so use them...

I see lots of women having babies past 40 here, and most of them work out just fine.

Recommend to her that she gets top quality antenatal and delivery care. The hospital is the place to be at that age. No farting about at home or in a tank full of dolphins or capybaras or whatever is the trend this year.

That will be $350 please. Pay at the desk on the way out. Have a nice day.

My step-monster had my sister at 44. Aside from it being creepy, she was just fine.

Course, her being a brat might be a birth defect, I haven't decided.

My aunt had her 3rd child at the age of 42. No problems whatsoever. I do remember her complaining about how tired she was throughout the pregnancy though.

Meh, I see women come in all the time having children well into their forties and they're fine.
