Medical journal retracts study linking autism to MMRFollow

(CNN) -- The medical journal The Lancet on Tuesday retracted a controversial 1998 paper that linked the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine to autism.

Quote:
The General Medical Council, which oversees doctors in Britain, said that "there was a biased selection of patients in The Lancet paper" and that his "conduct in this regard was dishonest and irresponsible."

The panel found that Wakefield subjected some children in the study to various invasive medical procedures such as colonoscopies and MRI scans. He also paid children for blood samples for research purposes at his son's birthday party, an act that "showed a callous disregard" for the "distress and pain" of the children, the panel said.

Nice. Not only is he a fantastic researcher concerned with the well-being of children, but a fantastic parent as well.

Quote:
Singer, the mother of a child with autism, added, "That study did a lot of harm. People became afraid of vaccinations -- this is the Wakefield legacy -- this unscientifically grounded fear of vaccinations that result in children dying from vaccine-preventable diseases."

Unfortunately, what are the odds that this will change the minds of those who have knowingly or unknowingly decided against vaccinations due to the results of this study? Probably not much, there's too much invested...too much playing defense already on the line.

*sigh*

Have you seen this?

http://www.jennymccarthybodycount.com/

Quote:
In May 2007 Jenny McCarthy announced that Evan was not a “Crystal Child” after all, but had been diagnosed with autism (there is a possibility that he may have been misdiagnosed). She holds on to the mistaken belief that Evan’s alleged autism was caused by his receiving childhood vaccines. Most anti-vaccination believers claim that the compound thimerosal led to an increase in autism cases. The Measles/Mumps/Rubella vaccine is their usual target. However, thimerosal was never used as a preservative in the Measles/Mumps/Rubella vaccine. All vaccines licensed since 1999, with the exception of a few multidose container vaccines (such as some, but not all, HIB and Influenza vaccines), have not contained thimerosal as a preservative. Autism has not declined since 1999, thereby disproving this connection. In addition, Jenny McCarthy's child, Evan, was not born until 2002, well after thimerosal had been removed from most childhood vaccines. This has led Jenny McCarthy, and others, to claim that it was the MMR vaccine itself that caused autism or that it was vaccines in general that caused autism. All of these ideas have been disproven in multiple scientific and legal examinations of the evidence.

Jenny McCarthy or the CDC? Huh, I'm just not sure.

She's just awful. Her misinformation gets so much play though--she's on all sorts of shows that middle American Mommies see, like Oprah or magazines, like Cookie. It worries me b/c it is a public health issue when children don't get immunized.

Great. Now if physicians could just stop LUDICROUSLY over diagnosing children, and we could change the name of disorders on the low impact side of the "spectrum" to "Shy", we'd be in good shape. That won't happen, of course, but it'd be nice.

Oh, I googled it already. It's way hippy-dippier than you thought, even if you were thinking it had to do with rainbows and unicorns.

Don't listen to Jenny McCarthy.

I read somewhere that the man who did the faulty study also had a possible motive behind wanting to tarnish the reputation of the MMR vaccines, as he had apparently developed his own patented version of them and could have made money off of it had he gotten enough people to switch. I can't remember where I read it, though. I saw it on Digg on my cell phone. Smiley: frown

I love that. "Whoops! Turns out Evan isn't a super-evolved god-child after all. Just kind of mentally disabled."

I was actually watching the evening news today, and there was a woman would would not be dissuaded from the Trüf. Apparently there is a conspiracy to suppress this, and she said she didn't need scientists in lab coats to try to tell her otherwise, because the parents really know.

I would have laughed if I hadn't already spent all my energy groaning.

Fucker. (Not twice my age - I'd have to be 15 for that to be right, not 28.)
