For purposes of this poll, "optimal conditions" are those in which the male can have non-consensual intercourse with the other party (through intoxication, drugging, threat of violence, blackmail, etc) without fear of arrest or future discovery by others.

Under optimal conditions, what percentage of males in your opinion would engage in rape?
Under 1%:2 (2.3%)
1-5%:8 (9.3%)
5-10%:20 (23.3%)
11-20%:10 (11.6%)
21-35%:14 (16.3%)
36-50%:10 (11.6%)
51-65%:5 (5.8%)
66-80%:4 (4.7%)
81-90%:4 (4.7%)
91-95%:2 (2.3%)
95-99%:0 (0.0%)
Over 99%:7 (8.1%)
Total:86

I was going to make a response in the sex doll thread indicating that, if the creator was willing to ignore the ethical boundaries, he could probably make a small mint in dolls who responded to the stimuli as though they were being raped or molested. I got distracted by wondering what people thought the potential market for that would be versus the "That's just horrible" reaction.

This poll isn't really about that specifically but rather a spin-off from the idea and asking more generally about people's opinions on other people's boundaries and whether we're constrained more by fear of punishment or by moral/ethical boundaries. I'll just assume for ease of mind that everyone voting is talking about other people and not themselves.

If I was more forward thinking, I'd have divided the answers into male/female categories to see if female perception of men as potential rapists is notable different from men's.

I left out a 0%/100% selection because I don't think the answer is that absolute. Some beatific or demonic individual will skew the results away from the ends of the scale.

I'm sure there are also people who have rape fantasies who would still not carry them out even if they knew there'd be no repercussions, so your rapedoll idea would probably be a pretty solid moneymaker.

The "rapedoll" thing was spurred by Guenny's statement that anyone who can afford robotic sex dolls could probably go out and flash some cash for real sex. I'm sure there's more to it than that (complete social ineptitude, etc) but if we take it as true then your real market would be in meeting sexual desires that can't be easily or legally "bought".

I voted 5-10%, but I guess if this was on offer all the time, the number of people that would have used it at one time would be higher.

I went 25-31 as well.

Technically, I have to be honest, I would have preferred a 22-27 fork. It would have reflected the percentile approximation of my informed speculation more accurately. So Joph, maybe next time make 20 categories. That would be my bit of advice.

I was going to go that low. Then I remember most of the behavior I see weekend nights from frat boys around campus. Plus, I was reading TFLN earlier and boy, that will kill your hope for the best intentions in people.

Throw in the fact that rape can be whenever there's no explicit consent, and I feel like there's plenty of people doing rape when alcohol is involved.

Yeah, around 33% sounds right.

This. It's remarkable how many guys have no qualms about feeding a girl alcohol and attempting to take advantage of her drunkenness.

I voted 99% in hope of being wrong.
I myself can honestly say I would be in that 1% who thinks rape in any manner, allowed or not, is still just flat wrong.

And this thread reminded me of this, probably NFSW.

I voted 5-10%. I think that a rape fantasy and actual rape are too different, and I think that the vast majority of guys would feel icky about actually raping a girl.

Getting a girl drunk to get her to consent is one thing. Drugging a girl so she passes out then humping her prone body is another, IMHO.

On a semi-related note, I wonder how many women would admit to having some sort of "rape" fantasy. Mostly because this thread reminded me of a scene in Californication where the bald agent bursts in on his ex-wife having sex with this big black dude in a "rape fantasy" situation, and the agent jumps on the guy and tries to get him off of her.

Interesting, I said 5-10% as well. It seems the femmes have a higher opinion of the hommes than the hommes have of themselves.

This does not inspire confidence. Smiley: laugh

I voted 1-5%, but wish I could take it back and replace it with 5-10%.

My reasoning is pretty much what Belkira said, not much else to add.

Like I said, my quote was spurred on by a day's worth of reading about men and their sex dolls, and I do realize the social ineptitude is really a huge part of the situation, but if a man can get enough cash to afford a robot that costs as much as a car, he should be able to at least buy (high end?) prostitute that can at least help with his needs for companionship, sex, etc.

Really, a lot of the men with dolls spend most of their time lamenting about the trials of saving up for a new one, while spending all of their money in the children's section of department stores buying outfits for the ones they already have.

A lot of it, in part with the social ineptitude, will cross-thread shenanigans with the post I just made about over-sexualizing young, attractive women. Most men have this physical ideal of a woman that they think that they will never obtain, and after years of growing up in our culture it can become like a forbidden fruit. I think there are a lot of men who would use their "get out of rape free card" at a fairly young age, I think, when they are emotionally immature and have little (hormonal) impulse control.

I voted high.

I wanted to add, also, that really, the majority of the men with sex dolls do use them because of the COMPLETE control factor. Most of these men give them personalities just like their own ("She loves Linux! We talked about it for hours last night!"), same hobbies, it's almost narcissistic in a way, but it's sad, because it really stems from their fear and inability to deal with a real woman with real emotions that sometimes just don't make sense.

I think I voted high because I supposed in the situation, that the woman would be more likely to be in a sedated state than a threatened one, maybe even completely passed out. There are men who would take advantage of it to displace emotions that are romantic in nature.

I voted 5-10 and hope that it wouldn't be higher. The comments about getting someone drunk enough so they'll have sex would push the number up if they are counted though.

I think that it wouldn't be to terribly high just because sure, you can get away with it, but it doesn't make it any more culturally acceptable or right. I'd hope that most people don't have such power issues.

Don't know how old the research is or how accurate, but according to this site:

"35% of college men who voluntarily participated in psychological research conducted at several universities indicated they might commit a rape if they knew they could get away with it."

I find that rather scary. But it does says 'might', which is a lot more iffy and open to more positive replies than a definite '100% all the way yes.'
