If I had the money, I would install a surveillance system. You can never be too safe.

Surveillance systems are a complete waste of cash on most homes. You don't want to catch burglars; you want to deter them from choosing your home.

This is what was true when I worked in retail. Some of the managers liked to try to be sneaky and catch thieves in the act. But the best way was to be imposing and prevent them from even attempting to steal at all. Deterence works better than trying to ensnare.

Saying that it's fine doesn't tell him where to improve the site.

No, but providing a range of options with positive feedback also tells him where his resources don't need to go. At the very least it gives people who have no complaints an outlet for their opinions.

I guess my first question would be, at what time of day were these other houses robbed? If they were daylight burglaries, lights coming on won't be much of a deterrent.

I don't know. I'm trying to find that part out. I'm figuring that it couldn't hurt to install them anyways. and they are fairly inexpensive. The front decorative one is like $60 or something, so no huge loss if its a waste of time.

And if they do break in, why not setup a honeypot?

Quote:
A house burglar was caught after a webcam on the owner's computer recorded images of him carrying out the raid.

Stills of serial raider Benjamin Park, 19, of Cambridge, were sent to an email address so even when he stole the computer, the images could be found.

Police said it was a "brilliant idea" of software engineer Duncan Grisby, who set it after a previous burglary.

Cameras on some middle-class nobody's house in suburbia screams "Meth Lab" to me. Either that or "I've got something locked in my basement, and I don't want you to know about it".

Seriously though, it's over the top. Get some Brinks stickers and slap them all over your home. It'll cost a million percent less and it'll be just as effective.

I say go full out and just get heads on pikes. While you might have a harder time getting to know the neighbors, you'll have nothing to worry about in regards to your personal and property safety.Smiley: nod

I kind of agree with Allegory. The lights are an immediate deterrant. Cameras don't do much except let you know after the fact that some guy in a black hat pulled low broke into your house. Unless you're planning on monitoring your home on your iPhone 24/7, any smash-n-grabber will be long gone.

Strong locks, lights and maybe something to make noise upon entry. Maybe a 15' fence topped with concertina wire.

Hang spent bullet cases from fishing line outside of all the windows of
your house.

Put up signs- 'Please break in. I would love the opportunity to kill you
legally."

Write: "Tresspassers will be shot, survivors will be shot again". And paint fake body count over 5 next to it. Add fake and visible claymores on frontyard, old issues of "Guns&Ammo" on your porch.

You can also write fake letter to your fake roomates:

"Hey, Billy Ray. Went to pick up Randy from prison. Be back in a jiffy. Brutal and Grinder were aggresive as *****, we should put them to them dog ring fights again. Anyway I closed them both inside, so watch out, ok? Did you remember to buy beer and extra ammo for rifles?

C'ya
Raymond"

But seriously: you can't have too much security at your home. When we lived in house we had motion detector connected lights and anti-burglar shutters. If you set the reflectors right it won't be too much of a hassle for neighbours. While they may not pay that much attention after some time, the burglars will know that if they approach home there might be witnesses. Professional shutters work nice too, of course they can be breached but it takes time and it's visible. Both these things can help you scare off thieves.

If my friends house is broken into, either through any of the windows or doors, while the alarm is on.. the entire block will hear the intruder siren thing followed up by something similar to "Step away from the house."

You can be pretty sure that would deter away anybody.

One of the houses next to ours - relegated to a seasonal home - has the blaring air-raid siren alarms set to a hair trigger. With all the semi-feral cats roaming around the neighborhood the damn thing goes off practically every day. With no one living there most of the time it's usually a few minutes till it's shut off remotely.

Ouch, that has to be expensive. Usually the security company charges you a pretty penny for a false alarm.

If we're lucky it'll bankrupt them and they'll have to deactivate the alarms and sell the house.

Security cameras aren't much of a deterrent unless they're visible and even then, someone who really wants in will find a way. All they're truly good for is getting a visual on the culprits for the purposes of court and a $130 system isn't going to give the quality you need to win in court.

Keep with the alarm on all doors and windows and motion sensored lights and you'll likely get left alone as the thieves will choose easier prey (your neighbours who lack alarams and motion sensored lights).

Every time you leave just put a wire in your doorway to trip the burglar. Then, on the floor right in front of the door, lay a plastic mat that you glued a bunch of broken glass to.

At least it will hurt.

I'd take a weekend and watch a marathon of this. Then, with all that stuff in mind, look around your house and see what those guys would use against you as a way to get in, and see which of their suggestions are right for your situation and within your budget.
