I hope to hell that when I do die somebody has the sense to just dump me in the river or something. Anything except sticking me in a goddam cemetary. People coming and putting a bunch of flowers on your stomach on Sunday, and all that crap. Who wants flowers when you're dead? Nobody.

What I was really hanging around for, I was trying to feel some kind of a good-by. I mean I've left schools and places I didn't even know I was leaving them. I hate that. I don't care if it's a sad good-by or a bad good-by, but when I leave a place I like to know I'm leaving it. If you don't, you feel even worse.
Good-bye, Mr. Salinger []

Selfishly, I wonder whether he wrote anything else that might be published posthumously.

In 1999, New Hampshire neighbor Jerry Burt said the author had told him years earlier that he had written at least 15 unpublished books kept locked in a safe at his home.

"I love to write and I assure you I write regularly," Salinger said in a brief interview with the Baton Rouge (La.) Advocate in 1980. "But I write for myself, for my own pleasure. And I want to be left alone to do it."

Well, I mean, he was 91. That's a pretty respectable age.

I liked him for eschewing fame. That's not an easy decision to stand by, I imagine.

We need more eccentric famous people.

91 is a respectful age, but he's one of those that I just assumed would live forever.

I felt the same way about John Updike, actually.

Who died... a year and a day ago. *cue spooky music*

I'll admit it. I didn't like The Catcher in the Rye, and that's all I ever read from him (mandatory high school reading). I thought Holden Caulfield was a whiny ******* with a stick up his ***, and as I personally had felt no alienation as a teen and could not relate at all to the book. The one thing I did like about it was the carousel at the end, which made me understand the Dispatch song "Flying Horses."

I realize he (Salinger) was more than a one-trick pony though, and a lot of my friends who were going through their rebellious teenage years really enjoyed Catcher. So it's too bad :-(

Huh. Well, maybe you'll accomplish something of lasting value. I doubt it, but maybe.

I wonder if that guy who wrote the unauthorized sequel to Catcher in the Rye will have better luck getting it published now?

Disclaimer:

To make a long story short, I don't take any responsibility for anything I post here. It's not news, it's not truth, it's not serious. It's parody. It's satire. It's bitter. It's angsty. Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

Well, if the 2010 list remains confined to octo- and nonagenarians, we're in good shape.
