I guess this sets them up with a logical name for the larger version.

So it's a really big iPhone without the phone part?

Kind of nifty, I suppose and I imagine this is where the technology is headed but unless I'm missing something big, I don't see much revolutionary about it.

I think they forgot to add some sort of SD slot for expandable memory.

If it had the option for a stylus and Bluetooth keyboard, I admit it would be pretty cool. I just can't really get excited about it, though.

If they had made this first, we'd be all "OMG Apple took a laptop and reduced it all to one screen!" Then, when they made the iPhone, we'd be "OMG Apple made its iPad like only a couple inches across!!"

Instead, it feels like a step backwards. They took existing technology and just made it larger. Hard to get excited.

It's not even like a laptop with only one screen. It runs a mobile OS. Sure, the iPhone OS is pretty nice, but it can't even really multitask. Don't really care about multiple programs running on a small mobile phone, but for a laptop-sized device it seems really weak. As I see it now, I'd just use it as an overpriced color eBook reader.

That's exactly how I feel. It just seems so huge, and so useless. It also looks incredibly uncomfortable to hold and to use. I imagine I'd be accidentally pressing all sorts of things I don't mean to.

Exactly. It is literally just a huge iPod touch with a book store.

That's an interesting take. I mean, it's hardly a surprise or a crazy new idea, but I don't feel like this is a set backwards at all. The Ipod is great and all, but it's really too small to be extremely useful.

This is a strength, not a weakness. The ipod interface is incredibly intuitive and it would be stupid to abandon it. In addition, these platforms live and die by there apps and it would be even more absurd to take away that part. While the similarity will allow more rapid development, there is much more scope on this platform to make the apps far better.

It's basically a big Kindle that you can play games on.

It is pretty much a big iTouch.

With zero ports, no stylus for draw apps, and another handful of useful features, it is merely a toy. It could have been an interesting alternative to a laptop - which I guess it is for those people who only email and surf - but for those people who already have an iTouch or iPhone (or an existing laptop), this is only a 'fun to have' gadget.

At least the pricing is less than I expected, but overall I am underwhelmed.

Not really, its a huge step forward in usability and performance. Yes it may use proven technology but this may be the book replacement we have been waiting for.

Usability and performance are often more important than the tech. Apple are very good at both.

However, if you run out and buy it you can be a unique individual!

You know, just like all the other people who are going to run out and buy it.

The people in the video they put out are far far too excited though. Smiley: laugh

It also has the option of getting an actual keyboard for it, and I don't imagine a stylus would be hard to add on.

Yeah, but then.... what's the point? You'll need a desk surface to hold all your crap; so just use a laptop.

See, I feel it could have been a lot more useful if it was actually more than an ipod with a book store. Like a real computer designed around the iTouch interface. Now that would be cool.

I, for one, am against a book replacement. I like books. I enjoy the feel of a paperback in my hands.

Reading a computer screen makes my eyes hurt after a while.

I don't want to see books replaced. Smiley: frown

Books are made from the flesh of trees.

It's like, why cut down trees for tables when you have a perfectly good tummy to eat on?

The paper technology screens like what the kindle uses are supposed to be the same for your eyes as a real book. That being said, I love real books, and don't really want them replaced either.

Oh I agree, it's not a office computer. I was just responding to whoever was complaining that it didn't have a keyboard.
