Heh... silly Travolta. Haitians don't have any money.

But think of all the money getting donated to Haiti right now. A few gullible people with too much cash see Travolta and his church on TV, get interested, get hooked, get "saved."

It's publicity.



Oh a separate note, John Travolta is a pretty cool guy. He lives in Ocala, 30 miles south of here (and where I lived for several months after college, since my parents live there), and is seen around town pretty frequently. Whenever one of his movies comes out the local movie theater has a red carpet event and he comes out to watch the movie with the town. He's actually sat down at a local diner with a friend of my ex and chatted with her and her friend. He's pretty personable.

No other religion I know of will lend you the money to pay for the services and then asking you to pay it back later or else it precludes more services. Also no other religion I am aware of so radically changes what it tells you over time - and in exchange for money no less.

Lastly, in Los Angeles, the Scientologists have shown up at several disaster sites (train wrecks, etc) to help out. I'm not sure it makes the news anymore, but at first it did and the scientologists claimed that it was firmly in their faith to provide charity, although without reference to any specific firm religious document.

No, but Scientology is a bit worse. It's jsut so obviously a con. It's so transparent. The founder who said "A great way to make money is to start a new religion" just before starting Scientology. The apourling mythology based on his own ludicrously bad Sci-fi. The stupid electro tests, the questionnaires, the analysis of what's wrong with us, the ways they have to "cure" this, the blatant money-grabbing, the thousands of stories of people who were psychologically wrecked when they tried to leave, it's all so recent and so well documented. There's not even the mystic of "oh look it's a really old book and it happened a long time ago back when people lived with dinosaurs and angels randomly appeared out of the sky it was super".

So, it's basically like a religion for really, really, stupid people. They-should-probably-give-power-of-attorney-to-their-next-of-kin stupid. And they methodically and analytically exploit those people.

I'm not a fan of his chosen religion but it's possible Travolta simply saw a need, had the means, and just decided to go save some lives.
