An author's attempts to write a Bill Watterson biography

Hard to believe the strip's been ended for around 14 years now. My kid discovered a couple of my books a year or two ago and loved them. He looks to see if there's any he hasn't read yet each time we go to the library. Anyway, I though the column was interesting so I'm passing it along.

They often have the Calvin and Hobbes anthologies on sale in the discount aisle of Barnes and Noble for around $5.00 if you are ever looking to get more of them.

Bill Watterson never ceases to amaze me. Gotta admire someone who manages to resist commercialism and celebrity status despite having it handed to him on a silver platter.

I never get tired of reading my entire collection year after year.

The 10th anniversary book gives a glimpse into the authors life, and is well worth the read imo. I was very sad when he stopped making comics.

We have all the collections and Xavier discovered Calvin and Hobbes last year when reading really clicked into place for him. In fact I'd say Calvin and Hobbes contributed greatly for his love of reading now. Many a night I'd catch his bedroom light on trying to sneak in a couple more pages. 14 years done and it's still getting new fans. Smiley: smile

He has a Sunday Strip collection out as well (not sure if it's still in print, I saw it at the library) which has his notes on each strip and why he thought it worked or didn't work, his thoughts on those "detailed art" style strips (the ones with dinosaurs and jet fighters and stuff), why rotary phones and dial televisions are funnier, etc. Not much about his personal life but interesting stuff.

I love those ones. I especially enjoy the realistic 'playing house' type grown up ones.

Obligatory post.

As much of an enigma he is, I don't think I'd want to read his biography. For one thing, it'd probably be pretty boring. And also, it would probably get me thinking too much about the author when reading the strips, and distract from the work itself. (Which normally isn't a issue with most authors, but I don't have a problem preserving this mystique in this case.)

It truly is!

Unfortunately my cat thinks it's also a scratching pole. Luckily it's a sturdy box, but still a sad thing.

Its an entertaining and informative read (a lot of insight into cartoon syndicates and the merchandising), but it's about as much of a biography of Bill Watterson as Roger & Me (1989 Michael Moore documentary) was of Roger Smith.

Sorry for the bump, but Joph appears to have inspired an actual interview.

I find the timing.... interesting.

I remember finding a pretty good interview he did based on reader questions 5 years or so after he quit.

The best way to get some insight is just to get the 10th anniversary book though.
