Remember the Danish 'Mohammed' cartoonist? A deranged islamist tried to kill him.

If you have lived in a hole in the past, the picture that caused offense is shown here. His reasons for making the cartoon.

Seems to me, that the cartoon is very accurate and actions like this only serve to confirm it.

Yeah, the old irony: use violence to punish people who dare call their religion violent.

This is one of two threads today that just illustrate how divisive and moronic religion is.

Yes, because the non-religious are so much more open-minded about systems of belief.

Sure, religion plays a major part in the anger but what people forget is how much of the anger is actually directed towards the west because the US and Britain (among others in Europe) have invaded and colonized the middle east, both literally and symbolically. The west has been arrogant, seeing our culture and beliefs as far superior while denigrating their religion, their social moirees and their systems of government. People really forget how much of this is a clash of cultures, not just religion.

We've been pricks for years. I think we shouldn't pretend that the anger is just about religious differences and I don't think it's just about people in the middle east being crazy. This type of radicalism results in part from the fear of being taken over by the west. People like Bush and others who invade, some seeking to eliminate Islam and push our culture on them, do nothing if not help radicalize people and shut down the modern, urban, middle class Muslims.

This is what I've heard from Muslims from the Middle East for years.

My point is that **** like this isn't just happening because of "religion" though the ways that you guys tend to extricate religion from other aspects of society is retarded and shallow, but whatever. It's happening because of culture and a perceived lack of respect.

I hate to be a cultural imperialist, but maybe their social mores and systems of government could use a bit of denigrating.

Maybe ours do as well but there isn't exactly an equal power exchange.

If you are going to kill a cartoonist, at least go the extra mile and do it by dropping a safe on them from a tall building, or some sort of comically large explosive with a needlessly long yet extremely fast burning fuse. Or maybe a rube goldberg type machine involving a catipult. Anythign less is just not trying hard enough.

I just read today about some Muslims throwing a decapitated cow's head onto the site of a proposed Hindu temple in Malaysia. Jerks.

Yeah, when they want to **** off the Hindu's they usually have a barbique near their temples, which results in riots and much stabbing. Sort of like Philidelphia, but with religious overtones.

It's okay, the Hindus sent it back wrapped in bacon.

God, I wish he'd give it a rest. I mean, frankly, Garfield was never good, but it's been obvious for a very long time now that he's completely out of ideas. The ever present dearth of wit and charm has become an unfathomable void that loves monotony and swallows laughter. I can't believe the comic's been going for what, thirty years and the characters are still as two dimensional as the paper they're printed on. Jesus. You know, Garfield can be viewed as a microcosm for most of what's wrong with society.
