Your sea lions have gone MIA!
Video link:
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2009/12/30/dnt.ca.missing.sea.lions.ktvu?iref=allsearch

So what is making them leave? Future cataclysmic earthquake which will finally drop CA into the watery abyss? Pollution? Or they got tired of the sour dough clam chowdah bowl leavings?

Yeah, it's eerily quiet on the wharf. There were hundreds as recently as October.

Of course no one ever really explained why they showed up in the first place, either.

Sea lions haven't left La Jolla so it's all good in Southern California.

Well, I mean, they haven't deserted Northern CA either. It's just their hangout at Pier 39, where they were considered a plague at first and then a tourist attraction, that is now empty.

But again, no one ever adequately explained why they decided to hang out there in the first place. It's not like the Pier Commission built a sea lion bar and grill for them.

I suppose marine mammals can have fads, just like us.

"This place used to be cool, man, before all these other posers showed up. Lets go hang out somewhere else..."

I honestly have no knowledge of this but the Mr mentioned that they showed up around 1989 after some earthquake. I have no clue if that is correct or not. if it is though, it intrigues me. What I think is most odd is that it happened in a very quick time frame and no one has a clue as to where they took off to. Just seems weird.

Huh, hadn't heard that. That would be the Loma Prieta quake.

Turns out they showed up a little before the quake. Huh.

Edited to add link.

"Wellllp, looks like the 'bark at tourists until we float out to sea' campaign is a wash. Back to the drawing board."

Yeah I saw that article the other day, right after spending last weekend in the bay area and wondering where they all went.

There were a few still hanging about, but not the giant crowd of them that is usually there.

While, by comparison to you, a sea lion is a rational being, compared to your average person they are not.

And the mystery may be solved. Like all Californians they were just plotting to invade Oregon.
