Quote:
Federal officials and police are interviewing a Nigerian man, who allegedly tried to "explode" a powdery substance aboard a Northwest flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, injuring himself and two other passengers, law enforcement officials said.

The man said he was directed by al Qaeda to explode a small device in flight, over U.S. soil

It seems that whenever we think we've finally got a handle on security, something like this happens.

The most interesting thing about this is the fact that six months ago, his own father (a retired Nigerian government official) reported him to the US Embassy because he suspected he'd do something like this. People are now wondering why the hell he wasn't placed on a No Fly list.

/golfclap for those nice Homeland Security guys.

Yes his pappy took the trouble of visiting the US Embassy in Lagos to warn you of his radicalisation, you have him on a watch-list, and the Brits notified you he's been barred from resuming his studies in london cause he's a fundamentalist whack-job.

Benefit of the doubt, eh lads?

Still not forgiven the US Homeland muppets for smashing open my suitcase to check it, taping it closed and sending it back with a crappy photocopied 'sorry' note. CUnts.

This could never have happened under a Republica... oh, wait.

What's the point of having someone on a no fly list if they're still allowed to fly?

Wasn't it on a plane from Amsterdam to the US? How much control over foreign security methods does the US Homeland security have? (A serious question, would the Homeland security have control over who boards these foreign flights?)

Did he go through customs in Amsterdam or was he going to go through customs in Detroit? If he goes through customs in Amsterdam, then that's when they deny him his flight.

Reports that he made it through two international airports without suspicion. Some heads are gonna roll.

I enjoyed listening to the Dutch fella that stopped him, put out the fire and help restrain him on board the plane. He's so chilled out about the whole thing. Funny.

Yes. And the process is separate from Customs (about the movement of taxable goods).

All passports are checked for passengers flying into UK or USA and if they're on a 'no-fly' list, they're refused boarding (and usually detained).

This guy was not on a US no fly list, but a 'watch list' - diff'rent fing.

It definitely would have made my last flight more enjoyable. That woman I was stuck next to was annoying as hell, but at least she was attractive.

I've heard enough versions of what happened that I hesitate to say much until the story is shaken out a bit. Stories that he was on a No Fly list and/or a Watch List, that he had no passport and that he may or may not have had a visa, the assistance of some fellow in a suit, etc.

That's a somewhat different facet than him bringing the stuff on board. That part I'm not surprised about. If I had a dime for every story about TSA failing tests where someone tries to smuggle a barrel of dynamite on board, I'd be a man rich in dimes.

He's making a statement today. I'm sorry you feel adrift without him making a statement based on the half-factoids available over the weekend.

You'd think that you would not be so obvious with your sick obsessive disdain for this guy. If Obama had made a statement earlier, your morning post would be full of fault over what he said - regardless what it was.

I'd hope so but I wouldn't necessarily think so. Finding out the identity of some guy who may have helped him get a flight doesn't always happen faster just because you're the president.

No Obama's simply hoping ignoring the situation will suffice.

So, this is just freaking great.

My husband and I are flying out on Wednesday to go to Ireland. Because of this asshole and the assholes that let him fly even though there were red flags all over the place about him, our flight back to the US will be a peach, I'm sure.

The last hour of any flight into the US, no one will be allowed to have any personal belongings on their lap. You will also not be allowed to touch any of your carry-on baggage during this last hour. So for the last hour, I suppose we just sit there and pick our noses. Smiley: mad There will also be a ton more checking of carry-on baggage in the airports, and a lot more armed policemen around.

When we went to Italy for our honeymoon, my carry-on baggage was checked at every single gate. We didn't get past one gate. My husband says it's because I have dark hair and a darker complection. I think it's because I was with him and he just naturally looks suspicious. Smiley: grin

Really?
