I do like how Avatar justified all of the slow-mo action stuff by stating somewhere at the beginning that the planet had lower gravity than Earth.

Hey, Wall-E was really well done environmental propaganda.

It also had balancing political statements. The environmental angle was there, but so was a not so subtle warning about the dangers of a welfare state. And it had cute robots!

Yeah. And as someone else pointed out: creepy.

Stargate!!! That was good! Very straightforward plot again, but I love it. Great baddy, great hero, great sidekicks, great monsters.

Hah! Forgot about that one. A simplistic plot to be sure, but thought provoking anyway. Also, they solved their problems by figuring out how to use the technology in clever ways. It was also ridiculously loud in the theater. It was one of the few sci-fi films I walked out of and chattered with my friends about how neat the concept was. I distinctly remember having a conversation in the car ride afterwards about how they could make sequels easily because there clearly had to be other stargates out there (else why require dialing a coordinate rather than a combination?). Didn't even think of a TV series...

Actually, I just recently watched Total Recall again. Another sci-fi film that did a great job of incorporating the technology into the plot and leaving you wondering what was really going on.

I was a little meh on Avatar. It was visually cool with all the 3D stuff but definitely, I'll probably never see it again.

The Second Renaissance was incredibly depressing. God, that freaked me out when I saw it. And then again the second time.

You know you can just say something sucks if it sucks.
There were a lot of things I liked about the movie. I like the whole 'avatar' concept - going into a real alien body. How cool would that be. I really liked Sigourney's role. It was kind of unexpected. Being a Cameron film, all the 't's were crossed making the fantastical as believable as possible.

The General was very cliche, the copter pilot too. But the company rep - the short guy, showing just a bit of conscience - but not too much, was good. I liked that.

As I mentioned before the Navi were cool and very palatable for having tails and all. The actress that played Natiri did an exceptional job. The guy that played Jake Sully was also pretty good. I've never heard of either of these two lead actors - but they out-acted so many of the 'big' names out there. I'm glad I didn't have to watch Ewan McGregor ruin another big-budget flik.

The story was about a corporation that seemed to lack humanity, but the bigger message was really anti-human. There were plenty of references to human beings in general not being good stewards of and ruining our own planet.

She was the witch-woman in the Pirate movies? Hah. She was good in them too, though I had a hard time understanding her.

You want some great sci-fi's:

Wrath of Kahn/Search for Spock (and a few others star trek movies)
Blade Runner
Original star wars trilogy
Dune
Event Horizon
Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy
Terminator Series
Alien series
Predator series
Logans Run
Matrix series

The point is there are plenty of good sci-fi's out there. Avatar isn't one of them.

Event Horizon was only loosely sci-fi (it fits more into horror - claiming it's sci-fi just because it's on a spaceship is like claiming the concept behind Doom is sci-fi), Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy likewise (but comedy this time), and the Matrix series was not good sci-fi (you want a good version of this concept, I'll have to refer you to Jack L. Chalker's Wonderland Gambit trilogy).

As far as Dune, I sincerely hope you're referring to the miniseries version that was on the Sci-Fi channel, and not the butchery that was the 80s version.

On the plus side, you didn't list 2001 (which, if remade, could be good sci-fi, but...). On the minus side... to be honest, I'm not entirely sure why you left AI out (where the failings are entirely on the opposite side of the coin from the Matrix series - the sci-fi is good here, the rest of it is crap).
Total Recall and The Fifth Element were a couple good Scifi movies.

Yup. Also the romantic interest in Drumline and um...something else I recognized from her Wiki page but have now forgotten.

I saw this at the IMAX 3D this past Sunday and loved every second of it. Ill agree that the story was tired and over done but the visual effects were AWESOME. Definitely going to buy this when it comes out.

When the general is lifting weights and talking to Sully, he stated that "Since the gravity is lower here then on Earth, you have to work harder so you don't get soft."

Without the eighty foot screen and the rather impressive use of 3D, it just wouldn't be the same.

I think he's objecting more to the implication that low gravity causes highly localised time dilation. Personally, I assumed by by slow-mo action stuff Demea means long jumps.
