Silly bsphil, farming okra is conservative.
To be honest I had a moment's hesitation to really include something that he might not break down into left/right.

No; i'm asking what gives them the right to claim the land as their own.
The fact that they live there. It's not really a terribly complex idea.

Interesting. Not that many Imperialists still around.

Actually I think he's trying to "trick" us into supporting some point of his. It's a common tactic for people who don't understand having a consistent position on something, that doesn't inherently contradict itself.

The dude with the scars in the mech was hands down the best actor in the movie.

That aside, there's a pretty common theme of "Evil" corporations throughout all of James Cameron's movies (Terminator 1 & 2, Aliens, The Abyss). Knowing that, you still went.

By your logic, by going to the movie you're supporting a socialist by participating in Capitalism.

Now go to the corner & think about what you did.

Titanic and Dark Angel can be added to that list. Even if Dark Angel was a TV series.

Actually I was just making the point that just because you live somewhere doesn't mean it's yours and your families forever.
So you agree with this? You don't think that the natives had a right to keep on living where they are? That's disappointing, and a little bizarre considering your view of the world.

Right is determined by might. That may not be the nicest way to determine things but there are lots of things about reality that I don't like.
Why support this though? Aren't you always talking about taking a principled stand and not compromising? That when something is wrong it is wrong?

Or are you saying that might=right is the best way of going about our lives?

And that government has no right to tell individuals what to do? Clearly if might makes right the government, as the most powerful body around, is always correct.

The terminator and alien movies are great (own all of them on dvd, bought not downloaded). I don't mind the anti-corporation theme so much if the story, acting, and effects are exciting. To impress me you have to accomplish at least 2 of those 3.

How were the effects in this movie? That's all I'm interested in. Watching the commercials on TV I had a hard time at first telling if the "real" people were actually live-action or really good CG like Polar Express or Final Fantasy.

I also heard bits of an interview with Cameron about the development of this movie and the work he went into fleshing out the world it's set in. He wanted to create a full language for the natives akin to Tolkien's Elvish tongues of Middle-Earth. That kind of effort really interests me.

If might does in fact make right, then it is impossible for the government to make a mistake in this context.

Any lawsuit challenging a government decision would be inherently frivolous, then.

Haven't seen it yet.

Bottom line question: If I go see it, is it worth the 12 dollars I will end up paying?

I struggle to imagine a hick like you surfing anything bigger than the foamies. Feel free to provide photographic evidence if I'm wrong.

Avatar is a awesome movie. I saw it in 3D and loved it. The Blue chick is hawt and the military are blinkered mass murderers just like they are trained to be in real life.

Varus is just angry that he doesn't have an alien appendage that he can plug into his okra plants and talk with them like the Na'vi do.

Seriously, though, I'd think Varus would have liked this movie. Despite any political differences, the script and plot were almost as hamfisted and simple-minded as the majority of his contributions to this forum.

It's worth seeing in 3D on IMAX just for the effects which are by far the most advanced in any movie to date. Just be prepared for the story to contain every overdone Hollywood cliche there is, and some of the cheesiest dialogue and one-liners this side of The Phantom Menace.
