Have the GREs really fallen that low?

I think the bar was already set incredibly low. I was taking a few GMAT practice test to assess my potential score, and the math is just ridiculously easy. GMAT is supposed to be harder on math and easier on vocab than the GRE, but the most difficult problems I'm seeing are 9nth grade geometry. A perfect score is very reasonably obtainable, which makes the test a joke.

GMAT isn't hard. Practicing for it is about making sure you're reading the questions 100% correctly as they attempt to trick you. Sometimes what they ask for is obvious, others it's not. The math itself is never hard.

The math isn't hard if you're used to doing math.

For those of us who gave up after honors calc ten years ago, seeing a lot of our old enemies alegebra and geometry is annoying as hell.

And yes, the math looks easy, but a lot of them are trick questions with trap answers. Rarely is any question truly straightforward. On my third practice test, I did MUCH better than I did on my first one, but I still fell for a lot of trap answers.

The verbal section, to me, isn't hard. The hard part is just knowing precise definitions of words. If you know the words, the verbal section is a snap. I'm going through my old "It pays to increase your word power" omnibus edition, since those tend to be theme based and show different shades of meaning between very similar words. On every single practice test I've done, I finished the verbal section with 10 minutes to spare.

If you can simply master when to use effect, and when to use affect, you'll catapult yourself into the top 5% of English writers.

All those identical student surveys on MMOs. What a waste. I want to see some really well done psychology theses on human individual and group behaviour on public fora.

This.

The format is designed to maximize consistent grading for large scale standardized tests, while still requiring the test takers to write an essay. If you have a single grader who is familiar with the subject matter, then the format of the essay(s) can be much more variable. But for a standardized test, you'll have hundreds of different people grading those papers, all with slightly different ideas of what a "good" paper should look like. By picking a simple standard, you can eliminate the human factor from the grading.

Certainly this is true; it is possible to grade an essay purely on syntax, but doing so is a farce. Nevertheless, if you would, in fact want to gauge someone's writing capacity on syntax instead of semantic content, a computer can do the same, and better.

Why bother pretending?

Most applications of them are easy to figure out, but finishing the problem set with alacrity requires more than remembering concepts. The skillful application of the principles of algebra and geometry is understandably harder.

Of course, it is multiple choice.. easy to fudge.

Yeah, it isn't that each individual problem is that hard. Given enough time, I could finish every single problem correctly.

However, you have 45 minutes to finish 28-30 problems. You can't spend more than a minute and a half on each one.

So some of them, when it becomes apparent you're going to have to do some fairly complicated algebra to solve, it's just easier to plug in the multiple choice answers and then make a best guess.

I'm aiming for perfect on the verbal. I'll be happy if I'm in the 600s on math.

(On that note, my studying break ends in 12 minutes, then it's back to vocab cramming for me. *sob*)

It's a good goal. I got very close scores on both though, and I felt oodles more confident on that section than quant (and I didn't finish he quant.)

I don't study though. If you're studying that much I'm sure it will catapult you.
#43 Dec 15 2009 at 7:07 PM Rating: Good
Well, not perfect, but still very good.

680 Verbal
660 Quant

Total: 1340
Which will make up for my mediocre 2.7 GPA in undergrad.

Essays have a genuine shot at 6/6. The topics were pretty similar to the practice essay ones I'd been messing with, so I was able to pin down the tone and structure of the grade 6 sample essays with the real ones.

I'll find out in about a month!

I think you got about the same scores that I did. I think I've got a little higher on the verbal tests (~700). I will say that you can't exactly compare a 680 on the GRE to the SAT--it's probably percentage-wise a higher score. Like you are probably above the 95th percentile.

IMO, given your GPA as an undergrad, I'd really think about getting together a kick *** essay for your application and sell yourself to the program. Sometimes that can be really compelling.

GREs have kind of an awkward scale structure.

800 Q = 94%-tile
720 Q = 75%-tile
610 Q = 50-tile

740+ V = 99%-tile
550 V = 75%-tile
450 V = 50%-tile

Little bit of disparity, No?

Yes. However, again, if you are going to graduate school for something related to math, you take a Math GRE subject test. Verbal scores are usually more important for most majors.

The essay is incredibly important for some programs--even more than the GREs, unless you completely fuck them up.
