Does sh*t like this actually help protect the children?

I'm failing to see how it does, even really indirectly.

The theory is that if you punish people who trade child ****, it'll remove some kind of market and therefore reduce the rate at which children are victimized by it. I honestly don't buy it either. I would assume that most of the kids appearing in child pornography are either involved in child prostitution, or are just victims of some pedophile. In both cases, the pictures are a byproduct of the primary crime. No amount of chasing down the guys trading pictures of the child victims will prevent them from being victims.

It is possible to trace said pictures back to the victims and the people victimizing them, but whether or not they prosecute some random guy who downloaded the pictures off a site or not really has not bearing on that. Or at least, I can't see how it does. And I also can't see how reducing the number of people downloading said pictures in any way diminishes the rate at which children will become victims.

And frankly, targeting those downloading the pictures takes away resources that could be better used to actually track down those who are at fault.

Windows would only allow the word document to be 16MB in size, after that it wouldn't let me copy paste anymore.

That can't be right.. I have a notepad file that's over a couple of gigs big.

(I wrote a java program that outputted 0 to the first line, 1 to the second, 2 to the third, and so on until I end tasked the process.)

Well the limit is actually 32 MB of text, according to Microsoft.

Yet another reason notepad is better than word, I guess.

Actually.....to make it illegal, those in question (in the pictures) have to be underage. I have seen several mid-teen girls that - if I didnt know their age - I could have easily mistaken them for being 21 years old. Conversely, I know several females who are older than 20 and look 15. I am sure there are some obvious crimes, but I also suspect that there is a large portion of pictures/videos that - while if the exact age is known would be illegal - if it is not, reasonable doubt about their age (people falling into the 15-25 year range) could be called into question which should throw out the case.

So, if the feds dont have the exact age of the girl - ie, they dont know who she is and cannot actually verify her age exactly - wouldnt that be reasonable doubt?

I was moreso makeing a general statement than a statement specific to this case. Although we would probably never know, as it seems the feds werent releasing any info and, well, we could never verify the evidence unless we want to be right there with him.

Unless, of course, the feds set them up to catch people. But I am sure that if they called the file GGW and it wasnt - and then arrested people for having it - it would be easy to proove entrapment.
