How do you cook yours. And if you don't celebrate thanksgiving then ***** off.

We generally spend all day smoking turkeys and watching football. Stick a big fosters beer can up it's butt and smoke under apple wood 3hrs. In between games and just passing the time we'll split wood, weather permitting.

Is "turkey" that pile of meat next to the mashed potatos, stuffing, and macaroni+cheese?

Jophed,

It's ok. You're a yankee so I don't expect you to know anything about smoking a turkey.

I celebrate real thanksgiving, not your fake one. I did smoke a turkey this year, and it was fantastic, I used a sage brine the night before. I try to do something different each year.

I don't understand how yankee is an insult. I mean, unless you support the Yankees. Ick. And weren't the Yankee folk (ie, English) the people who first celebrated Thanksgiving? Why do you hate the foundation of our nation, Varus? :-(

My mom's family are Canadian and they call everyone in the US, "Yankees," in an often disparaging way. They'd call Varrus a yankee.

Oh, I have a better test of this.

Varus, if you give someone a compliment that also doubles as an insult, what is it called? A back-handed or left-handed compliment?

I call it a back-handed compliment. My husband and I also refer to it as "kidding on the square," but that's just a personal joke.

I'm curious to find out if I'd be considered a yankee or not.

Statements of fact are not jokes.

I suppose it is if you're waiting on the South to rise again or something.

Apparently "real" southerners say "Left-handed." I never heard of that at all until I came down to FL. I mentioned a backhanded compliment and my friends looked at me like I grew a second head.

It's something you could lose, but not regain; the corollary is that you could gain southerner-ship, but not lose it. You would just get yelled at for maybe acting like a yankee.

"Come on Pensive, tie your tie properly, or you'll look like a Yankee"

If you were born a yankee, however, it would be possible to become acclimated enough to southern life such that you were not considered one anymore.

"Pensive you're starting to sound mighty congenial for a yankee *laugh*"

If a southerner did something truly deplorable insofar as s/he was considered a southerner, and was no longer to be considered as such, you might lament his/her loss, but it's never the fault of the individual

"Man, Pensive's been paling around with communists; those @#%^ing yankees got to him"

Pretty standard operation as a cultural identifier, only in this case it identifies southern culture as a negation of some pejorative, instead of an affirmation of a positive.
