10-year old Arkansas boy refuses to say pledgeFollow

http://arkansasnews.com/2009/10/15/hey-kid-youd-better-make-that-pledge/

How is this news, you ask?

Because he refused to say it since gay people don't get liberty and justice in America:

Quote:
There’s a 10-year-old lad, a fifth-grader at West Fork Elementary, who decided he wasn’t going to say the Pledge of Allegiance at school anymore because there was no liberty or justice for all in America, as the pledge’s rote recitation asserts.

He’d concluded that gay people didn’t get equal justice or liberty in this country and that he was loath to mouth something suggesting they did.

That is to say the boy was thoughtful, sensitive, courageous and free.

So his class had a substitute teacher who bugged the boy for not standing. She told him he ought to get up and say the pledge.

The youngster didn’t care for being nagged, and he snapped. He told the substitute teacher to go jump off a bridge.

Then the substitute teacher sent him to the office where the principal did not coerce or punish him in regard to the pledge, but did assign him, on account of his sassing the teacher, to do a report on the history of the pledge and the symbolism of the flag.

This still isn't news.

Kid: 7.5/10
Substitute teacher: 2/10
Principal: 9/10
Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance incorrectly, as shown in Calvin and Hobbes: epic/10

That's quite impressive for a 10 year old to have that kind of thought process.

Teenagers are supposed to "act out". Try being original next time.

Act out? You mean by refusing to participate in a mandatory prayer during the graduation from my public high school? By actually asking the principal who told us to "shut up and pray" if we had a problem with it? Dude, I wasn't acting out. My rights were being violated and I was the only one with the balls to say anything. Everyone else was all impressed with me in secret apparently. All lame *** ballsacks who said NOTHING. Smiley: mad

Now when I took a bunch of amphetamines during our class's drug free senior party--that was acting out.

Or that time when I stabbed the head teacher to death during "not killing the principal" hour.

Stupidity isn't an illness.

Not one covered under insurance, at any rate, public option or no public option.

That principle handled it extremely well, I thought. The sub shuts up and the kid gets to coherently express his views in a written format.

Wait, he's ten. He'll probably just draw a picture of Goku with lines pointing at it saying "awesome" and some scribbles labeled "asploding".

That was all I wrote when I was ten.

Good for you Anna, and @#%^ you to whoever down rated your post.

Your last line made me giggle by the way. Smiley: grin

Just because the kid is ten doesn't mean some adult brain washed him. Maybe he's just a smart and astute kid who can see when there are injustices in the country he lives in.

Oh, yeah, he died in a pretty dignified way for someone with a ruptured lung. he didn't say any quotable last words, but it was pretty obvious he would have come down on me like a house of bricks, were he not in the middle of passing away.

Do you think that's how they saw your actions or is it more likely that they saw your actions as a teenager acting out?

Yea, that's why you never got your headlines you cranky old whorebitch.

By the way, I wasn't accusing you of acting out, I was implying, as I have again in this post, that is how it was viewed. Slutface.

Seriously Cat stop reading daily Kos. And the kids a moron who obviously has parents who really really really liked the 60's. (And are still living there in their minds)

Hey. Moron. It didn't say that. It said there wasn't EQUAL liberty or justice. Way to fail at reading.

Also it's "kid's" or "kid is" not "kids."

Good point. You should totally find this kid, call him up and debate politics with him. You just might have a chance of coming out on top!

Remember this next time you feel one of your rights is being violated, because you still have all of your other rights, right?

I liked putting my hand on my boob over my heart during the recitation of the pledge. I kept track of it's development.

And yet I can bet you anything that if this same 10 year old had a news story about him making comments against gay marriage you would instantly write him off as yet another poor innocent kid that was brainwashed by his conservative republican parents.

This is not a news story.

There's nothing noble about keeping others from having rights. That's the difference.

“The moment a mere numerical superiority by either states or voters in this country proceeds to ignore the needs and desires of the minority, and for their own selfish purpose or advancement, hamper or oppress that minority, or debar them in any way from equal privileges and equal rights -- that moment will mark the failure of our constitutional system.” - Franklin D. Roosevelt

Creating alternate realities in your head to conform to an argument you feel more comfortable with isn't a particularly good method of making a point.

I bet you anything that if this same 10 year old had a news story about him making comments against gay marriage, a hundred million Morlock-Eskimos would tunnel up through the earth and use their freeze-rays to turn Arkansas into a glacier.

My argument is as valid as yours.
