Obama the golphing presidentFollow

For all you liberals who derided and chastised W for all the "vacations" put this in your peace pipe and choke on this;

Quote:
President Barack Obama has only been in office for just over nine months, but he's already hit the links as much as President Bush did in over two years.

CBS' Mark Knoller — an unofficial documentarian and statistician of all things White House-related — wrote on his Twitter feed that, "Today - Obama ties Pres. Bush in the number of rounds of golf played in office: 24.

Took Bush 2 yrs & 10 months."

This news comes on the heels of today's news that Obama played golf with a woman — chief domestic policy adviser Melody Barnes — for the first time since taking office.

So while our troops are struggling in Afghanistan instead of working on a strategy for victory Obama is hitting the golf courses as often as possible.

Only idiots seem to think there is some sort of victory condition for the multiple wars in the Middle East.

A game of golf takes a lot less time than a week of brush-clearing in Crawford. Maybe not the way you play golf, but for most people.

Apologize for what? For the fact that you started with a lousy premise? If the comparison isn't going to stand up to scrutiny, maybe you shouldn't open your thread by comparing Bush's vacation time to Obama's golfing game Smiley: laugh

But I bet you thought it was really a clever zinger when you wrote it. You'll get there some day.

You fail at math if you think a day long golf game is longer than a week's vacation Smiley: laugh

Three solid weeks of golfing? I'm impressed!

By the way, not counting earlier R&R's, Bush took a month long vacation from August to just before 9/11. So Obama has a lot of golfing to do before he catches up.

In all fairness W did give up playing golf as some sort of asinine gesture of sacrifice for the troops overseas. I'm sure this somehow resulted in thousands of lives saved, but I'm not sure how.

Do you honestly believe that Obama's golfing on any given day has even the slightest causal link to morale or efficacy in the war? This is like dropping my pencil and being blamed for enabling a murder five miles away.

On any given day no. On every single day yes. Do you think the troops like seeing their commander out golfing every single day while they're fighting for our freedoms?

Isn't that what they are fighting for?

I'd say they probably don't care about it anymore, probably even less, than they did about Bush sending them into a pointless war in Iraq while he was taking vacations.

What would you rather have him do? We aren't in the wondrous medieval days of war where a super amazingly important political figure can ride out into the front line to help out the troops.

I don't get this. When politicians try to directly contribute to or direct a war, the cry is always "rarw leave it to the generals dumbass." Okay then, so I'll just go golfing and leave it t... "rawr! you aren't being.. sensitive enough; pay us more attention"

Symbols do mean things to the troops. Like it or not having the troops see their commander fly a jet onto an aircraft carrier with huge banners saying "mission accomplished" does inspire the troops.

Uh huh, so Obama should just tell them that the war is over, and that they have won, but will have to remain in Afghanistan for ten years anyway. Why didn't I think of that wonderful way to boost morale?

Didn't the second pilot in the jet technically fly it?

Actually, I'd hazard to guess that Obama has played a lot more pickup Secret Service basketball games than he's played golf since he took office.

Wasn't Nixon the one that installed a bowling alley in the White House? Was that taxpayer funded, I wonder?

Golf also has an important, if understated, role in the business and political world. It's an opportunity for the players to exchange information informally, and to digest it with nothing but clear skies and green grass around them. It's the closest many in the US business world get to meditation, and probably the only reason that suicides are not more common.

He's still got 7 more years to beat Bush's record of taking more vacation time than any president before him, so I'm not too worried.

Edit: Also, Japan was an industrialized, advanced country with two predominantly peaceful religions (Buddhism and Shinto) and a legacy of warrior honor that meant when the war was over, it was OVER for them as a nation. Sure, the US continued to occupy it for another decade, but it already had a strong infrastructure in place to bounce back. Afghanistan and Iraq both lacked those elements.
