Poor people in America are rich compared to the rest of the world.

Well, parts of the rest of the world. I'm going to take a wild guess and say that the poor in most first world countries aren't much worse off than those in the US. Given the social nets in most of the first world, they may even be better off.

Saying that poor people in the Southwestern states or Appalachia or on Indian reservations in the Dakotas aren't as bad off as Congolese diamond miners because they have bigger homes than your average residence in densely packed European cities such as Vienna was just bizarre though. I mean, it's transparent why they'd compare it like that but it's weird that they couldn't come up with something less obvious.

Probably so.

I liked reading this bullet:

Quote:
Only 6 percent of poor households are over crowded. More than two-thirds have more than two rooms per person.

So, over 2/3 of "poor" people in the United States have more than two rooms per person. I wonder how much they had to twist the data to come up with that? Really? Poor people have more than two bedrooms each? Or does that include bathrooms and closets?

Rooms =/= bedrooms.

If you have a single parent and child, you would need an apartment with two bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom and a living room to beat the 2/per level. I assume it must boil down to family size because adding another person would require two more rooms. Even if you give them their own bedroom (although I'd expect two of them to share a bedroom either as siblings or coupled adults) you need another room. A den? If you add another person, each person needs their own room plus the bath, living room, kitchen, den and... a half bath? Laundry nook? Solarium?

Yeah, I don't get it either. Heck, if rooms per people is an indication of quality of life, having those parent/child households get married is going to probably decrease their standard of living in the eyes of the Heritage Foundation Smiley: laugh

Maybe rooms count as spaces at least 10 square feet separated by a layer of air?
