Sucked into the Black Hole Known as FaceBookFollow

Well I was sucker into getting an FaceBook account by my daughters, as a way to stay in touch with our Renn Faire Friends year round.

Then I found a few friends from High School. One of whom posts these great Nerd link to science and craft projects, and we renew a friendship over our knitting and love of all that is Nerdy.

I knit comforty socks and rave about how my feet love them and she knits the Periodic Table and squid.

Now I can't get on my computer without checking to see what she links she has posted.

While of course reading and watching youtube posts from Rennie friends.

Today my friend link to how to make Mummied Faeries, which I had to repost for all the Fairy Friends I ended up with, online since a lot of them are Renn Faire friends.

The only line I draw is don't expect me to play a game appt, just so you can earn more points or become the next Mafia Don.

So who comments on the Mummy Fairy link, I reposted but DSD.

Yes there is no escape once you find not just friends you made over the years are on FaceBook, but you kid brother and all your older nieces and nephew are there.

Only complaint I have is Jonwin refuses to make his own account and then ask me to befriend his co-workers and check out what they are posting.

So who else other Thumb, DK and DSD have been sucked into this black hole?

At 267 friends I can't keep them all strait in my mine. I need to cut the list down some, as I really never will attend some of the invites I get for local nude swims, concert nearly every night of the week, plus a zillion other things people keep sending me invites to.

Still my friend from high school been sending me recipes of meals that don't require milk that are simple to make and in my budget. So I keep coming back.

Then there all the non connected folk that look at you strange, as if you were some kid who plays DnD all weekend in your friends basement.

Oh I was that kid. In fact, I was the dream date for a lot of guys at war gaming con I went to when I was 17. Then my first boyfriend the year before introduce me as the girl that new so much about computers. He was same who went to war gaming convention were we got our Red Box set.

I broke down and set one up around the beginning of the year. I had family and a few friends pressuring me. It's nice to keep up with the family and friends, see the pics they post of the kids and whatnot. I got annoyed with the apps and games within a week of setup.

The random invites from former High School classmates gets annoying. Some of them are nice to connect with, but the ones from people I wasn't even friends with back then (and have to think to even remember who the hell they are) I could do without.

I also have a few contacts who post relentlessly. I don't really need to know that you got your workout in this morning, especially if you workout every morning. I think I can safely assume that one. Between about 5 of them they consistently fill up my wall, which unfortunately quickly pushes out the few posts from those who I would rather read.

But I don't spend much time on it. Especially after the first 2 weeks and the novelty wore off.

I use it, it's a handy way to contact classmates of mine, and be able to talk with my friends who are half-way around the world doing JET by leaving private messages.

I don't like the apps, really. They are pretty annoying and clutter up my page.

I also can't get how people can spend hours on it. There doesn't seem to be -that- much to do.

I only use facebook to stay in touch with old friends or people I care about but no longer see anymore since I moved for the whole "college" thing. I see my current friends often enough that I don't need to facebook them to know what is going on in their lives.

When I graduated from high school one of the first things I did was purge my facebook of all the pretentious little ***** that come along with every high school class.

All said and done that left me with 15 facebook friends.

Two words:

Mafia Wars.

Some of the apps on there are surprisingly addictive. My latest obsession, however, is MouseHunt.

You can filter them, you know. When you see a post on your newsfeed, if you mouse over the top right corner of the post, there appears a "hide" button. If it's just a post from a friend, you will see your friends name. If it's a post from an app, however, it will give you an option to hide posts from that app. So you can get rid of the app spam without getting rid of your friend.

I'm ever so slowly slipping towards getting one.

Most of my friends have one, I know a few of my relatives that I rarely see have them as well; and so on and so forth.

I'll hate myself a bit when it happens, but I'm probably getting one around about Thanksgiving.

I realized my gaming habits have devolved into Sorority Life and Pet Society.

I actually was the first in my family to sign up for twitter months before they had facebook accounts. Well oldest may have been on facebook earlier, but then all her friends just graduated from college and worked as programmers. It was my software developer friends who used to work for AOL that got me into tweeting.

Before that my friends just used tin cans and string.

Darn the first modem my dad brought home that work had to rent with the teletype machine he used to time on a mainframe that filled an office building, I remember driving by on our way to get ice cream.

We saved the ASCII pictures of Peanut characters he printed out for us for years. Darn kids don't know how easy they have it growing up without having to beg for green and white stripe paper to draw on. We felt special the one year they gave us a ream of newsprint for Christmas. Well actually not sure how my siblings felt, since I used most of it.

I spent far too much time around computers, since I was a child in the 60's.

I also ended up making a Facebook account this weekend. I'm now friends with...my family. Also a few random people from high school, and one or two old co-workers. My wife tells me everything that goes on on Facebook anyways, so it's going to be another MySpace (something I log into for a week at first then forget about entirely).

I don't do apps, I don't do games. My wife hijacks my accounts to play Mafia Wars and stuff like that so she has another person to recruit.

I also got Twitter during the whole Iran election deal, which I haven't used since thing, though my sister is following me.

I got in touch with alot of random people. I've moved a few times and have been to two high schools and college and grad school. I have had separate groups of friends at different points. It makes it easier to keep in touch. I saw a friend from my high school right before I left Boston. She said facebook made it irrelevant that we both missed our 20th high school reunion. I kind of wanted to go to one of them but logistically, with a move pending, it was too hard to organize.

Isn't the only reason to go to those things to laugh at those who you used to despise and how **** their lives turned out?

That's your 10th. By your 20th, you feel weirdly magnanimous towards those you despise, perceiving your common humanity. Then you return home and torture your Sims or make fun of zepoodle or something like that.

I believe my link is in my sig.

This is the only reason any of you are still on my friends lists, what with your "So-and-so got a new cow!" and "This person needs cilantro!" and "This dink killed a hooker!" reports.

I set up a Facebook account last year when Guenny and I got together and we were still doing the long distance thing as a means to alleviate her outrageous cell phone bills(that first month we spent something like four hundred hours on the phone). I used it just for the free IM program. I never uploaded any pictures of myself, nor a solitary morsel of personal information beyond my first name, and I still occasionally get emails informing me that some ****** from Allakhazam wants to be my friend. Get a life, you fUcking losers.

That said, I occasionally consider fleshing it out and allowing old classmates to seek me out, but I'm just not sure how much access inmates have the interwebs.
