What is mind boggling is that you don't realize how intricately God and a disenchantment with your life are intertwined in terms of historical theology. If anyone has an inherent, motivating impetus to abandon material pursuits in this world, it's someone who believes that there is another world coming.
Hah. Go look at an Egyptian tomb some time. One that hasn't already been looted, that is.
The Egyptians thought the afterlife was basically just like normal life, which was why they packed their bags before leaving. I'm not exactly a theology student, but I'm pretty sure Christianity explicitly holds to an immaterial concept of Heaven where material wealth means nothing. Camels going through the eye of a needle and all that.
The conflict between Christian teachnings and massive accumulation of wealth is readily apparent, but if it didn't stop popes from pimping out the Vatican in the 16th century, it won't stop them today.
