It's doubtful more will follow until the final bill (and even not then) but it gives the Democrats a bit of cover. It would have been a lot harder without even nominal Republican support.

SCHIP expansion had support from both parties when Bush vetoed it and again when Obama passed it. Prior to that, Bush's prescription reforms for Medicare had GOP votes. Whether that was good or bad is a separate debate.

Snowe's reasoning was, "When history calls, history calls." Smart lady.
She's a Republican in a state that has slowly turned purple over the last few years, and while fellow Republicans are going to attack her hard over this, Democrats will not be able to use "She voted against healthcare reform!" in their attack ads next election cycle.

True. Steps forward are always a good thing. I want to see what the HELP committee does with it. That'll be interesting.
Since she voted for the bill, might we hope that at least one other female repug might see the light when the final bill is voted on?

As this topic has been on here for about 3 and a half hours, and Varus has been posting for that entire time in another thread, why do I have a sneaky suspicion he's been holding off until he hears something from a conservative talking head?

I just hope that the final health care reform bill will offer some sort of competition for the private insurance companies. I was watching Rachel Maddow last night, and the guy covering for her (she's sick apparently) reported that health insurance companies have stated that when the bill passes without the public option, they will be "forced" to increase their rates three fold. This makes no sense considering if the government passes a bill that requires all citizens to have health insurance, their profits will already go up as it is.
Why is socialism such a bugbear for you? There's nothing in the founding documents about capitalism being the bestest economic system ever.
