Not to mention, a violent offender, who should probably just go straight to prison where they can prep him for the death penalty to be enacted upon him.

I'm curious, are private school teachers paid more than public school teachers?

Typically yes, but they're still not getting rich.

And that even if you do get sodomized, it'll be a little less painful.

Win-win!

They also don't get the same tenure and pension opportunities as public educators.

Which is part of what people miss when they ***** about state benefits for teachers. Those benefits are there to put off paying teachers a higher salary just as the auto-worker benefits were enacted in the 60's & 70's to keep wages low with the promise of good things to come in 20-30 years. To eliminate pensions and the like would require the state/local governments to start paying teachers twice what they do now. Which might be a good thing in the long run but I doubt most governments could afford it out of pocket.

I dunno. I used to lead anger management for court involved kids--I'd get all the kids who had trouble at school. They usually responded to consistency and clear consequences; being violent only would beget violence. They are used to beating the sh*t out of people and getting the sh*t beaten out of them. They aren't used to people being real and upfront with them. I had a colleague who worked for 20 years in juvenile detention--he hardly ever had a run away. Kids didn't get into violent confrontations or fights that often. He said it all comes down to respect. It's not about stripping a kid down. It's about raising his minimal expectations in relationships with authority figures.

Teachers don't have it easy. I think classes are often too large to be manageable. However, kids can smell blood in the water and in my experience dealing with group of teenagers, it had to do with losing control.

In what world do people coming right out of college get any work that's more than 20% above minimum wage, unless they're a trade?

Bricklayers get more than low-end teaching staff, and they don't need a degree.

Being a park ranger/forester can get you more.

Any degree involving engineering or R&D.

People with an MBA.

People in marketing or advertising.

CS or IT people.

I could go on, but you get the idea.

Bricklayers are in a trade.

That said, 20% over minimum isn't even $9/hr.

You're still assuming everyone coming out of college gets a job right away in their field. Naive.

Depends on where you are.

In a typically Communist state like Oregon, 20% over minimum wage puts you at just over $10/hr.

I went federal minimum for ease of use. Illinois is higher than federal as well.

But why assume that for teaching it isn't a problem and is for the other professions listed? The correct approach is to accept that it is a hazard for all and thus factor it out.

Fair enough. I still don't think most people coming out of college make $50k the second they start in their field, which is what teacher's make here starting out.

Regardless, I'm not sure what your original point was for. Most people that get into teaching aren't in it for the money, they're in it for the oppotunity to teach and influence others. Regardless of that, $50k is more than a lot of people make.

which is probably the only good thing about paying teachers so little, it keeps the moneygrubbing riffraff out of the schools and lets people who "care about kids' futures" in.

Yeah, the "let's keep wages low so only the truly dedicated will pursue this noble calling!" screed is mainly a transparent lie pushed by a society that devalues what is usually seen as women's work.

You'll notice, for example, that it applies to teachers but not administrators, nurses but not doctors. Et, as they say, cetera.

Stuff that.
