In case anyone was curious, here's what the desktop looks like under windows 7

Screenshot

They finally released the updated driver for my SAS drive controller, so the main machine is on 7 finally! yay.

went from vista 64 bit to 7 64 bit. Everythign is faster in 7. Basic operations, gaming, etc. I'm averaging about 5 frames per second (FPS) faster in most games over where I was before, which isn't huge, but it's not bad either.

Only hiccup i've encountered so far is the asus ai suite that ships with various asus motherboards doesn't like 7 on boot. Not critical, easily fixed. No issues with diskeeper or norton or any of the others that dind't like vista at launch.

If anyone wants to see screenshots of anything in particular inside 7, let me know.

I got a beta release of 7 a few months back (installed on a separate boot drive), ran it for a few weeks, haven't touched it since. My gaming got worse under 7, but I think that's because I had to install the game (BF2/PR mod) on the same drive, instead of using the copy installed for XP on my secondary drive, and being on the same drive as Windows kills it. Or something. I expect that a properly configured setup would be better with Win7 64 as opposed to XP.

Still want to try it on my laptop, if only to find out how low you can run 7 (32bit) on (P4 mobile, 512mb RAM).

I've been running on Windows 7 RC7100 64 bit for two months now. I love it to pieces and I have asked for the full version for my birthday (probably Premium instead of Ultimate, since I don't need any of the Ultimate features.)

The pin-to-taskbar on programs is the handiest thing. I used Quicklaunch extensively on XP and this just rolls it into the normal taskbar.

Yeah I just installed Windows 7 RTM from my MSDN subscription last weekend. On the surface, it's really just a Vista upgrade, but there's so much rework under the hood that it's amazing how stable it is. Of course, it's not released to the public at large yet, so who knows how long it'll take to become a virus magnet. Using windows 7 so far has been a real joy.

True. I heard people complain that it's cloned from Mac OS... but whether it's true or not really doesn't matter to me.

One thing many people won't like is how they added ribbons to programs like Notepad and Paint. I hated ribbons when I first ran into them, but I don't hate them as much now that I'm used to them.

I hadn't seen the ribbon for Notepad, but I liked it in Win7 Paint (which is actually a halfway decent art program now compared to older versions).

Notepad doesn't have a ribbon in mine. maybe that didn't make the final cut to the retail version?

Edit: Wordpad does though.

Me, too. I'm optimistic, so far, and they probably can sell the enterprise migration from XP now, so it won't matter much if I hate it or not in a year or two.

I've been running Win 7 on a work PC for a couple months, and it's been great. I've not yet loaded it on my home pc yet, and I don't really game on it anymore so I couldn't comment on games for it.

As soon as I can sneak a free copy after release I'll be running it.

The only games I've tried running on 7 are FFXI, Guild Wars and Arcanum, but they all work pretty well for me.

I still use quicklaunch, pinning items to the taskbar makes for huge icons, can only have so many before completely filling it and therefore cluttering the taskbar.

Just found out I got picked to host a Windows 7 launch party, so I get a free signature edition of Windows 7 Ultimate Smiley: yippee

My co-workers are all really interested so I think we're going to have it at work, I'll bring in my desktop from home to show it off.

Interesting.

Since I installed it, Windows 7 had put a shield on the FFXI taskbar icon.

However, after today's updates, the shield is gone.

Any reason why?

I still have the key and the download on my PC, will it expire at some point?

I paid £275 for Vista Ultimate when it came out, not sure I'm going to bother this time.

Serial numbers for pre-RTM(release to mfg.) versions of Windows 7 will not worth with the RTM version.

Yeah I can't imagine it's much (if at all) different than the regular ultimate edition.
