Except that it is working, just not to the standard many people want.

Tons, because there's no reason the two have to be connected in such a manner.

It doesn't work because you aren't behind it. You're afraid to try in part due to the possibility of failure, and even more afraid to try due to the possibility of success. If you weren't so milk-livered and cowardly about actually improving systems of public services, maybe you wouldn't have to be so pessimistic.

Really, the problem lies with you, not the system.

Hey, don't look at us. Your side is the one that keeps voting to strip funding from school systems. In the state of Georgia, all school employees from kindergarten to college have been furloughed for 6-12 days this year, and the budgets have been shrunk by 10-20%. We don't exactly have Dems in power 'round these parts.

That is a straw man argument.

If we on the right actually believed in a system that worked we would all be behind it. So, obviously we don't think the current system is working. Neither does Obama for that matter. He sends his children to private school. Can anymore be said?
"Pfft, nice straw man, mine's bigger"? He has special needs kids, of course they need to be in private school. Take a guess at what the president of the US's kids might have abnormal needs for.

Spoiler: security

"But isn't that showing a failure of the public school system? What about my kids/their kids/other kids/etc." (I'm skipping waiting for the rebuttal)

No, and if you're stupid enough to think so, you're stupid enough to not debate with. I bet you also think that state appointed attorneys for people who can't afford legal defense out of their own pockets is socialism too, right?

Obviously if a politican own a private car it means that the buses, subways and commuter rail doesn't work
Obviously if a politican goes to a bookstore, it's because libraries suck
Obviously if a politican has a security detail, it's because the police are hopeless and should be disbanded
Obviously if a politican buys bottled water, it's a clear sign that the water treatment facilities are garbage

It all makes sense, right?

Of course, there's also the chance that a politican who sends his or her children to a private school feels that the public schools in his area don't do as well a job as they'd want. This, however, doesn't mean that they feel the answer is vouchers or whatever talking point you think it should be. They may, in fact, think there's other, better, solutions and are working to enact them. This might explain why Obama's educational policies are different than someone else's.

I will admit I don't know how a liberal mind works but if you are happy being ranked 30th in the world regarding education then it's fine by me. If you call that working then more power to you.

We in MN spend half our budget every year on education. Money is not the problem. My kids are lucky I got a real education before it went to hell so I can make up for what the schools are not teaching them.

But as I said, if you are happy being 30th you go ahead and champion our public schools.

We're lower than 30th in the World in healtcare and that's run by private industry. I'm glad you support the public option.

Why would you expect otherwise with ridiculous non-sequiters and inconsistent beliefs? Garbage in: garbage out.

The #1 rated healthcare system in the US is the VA. Seize all of the hospitals around the country and let the VA run the whole system.

All the army/military doctors I had when I was growing up were nice. The vast majority of private practice doctors I've encountered have been pricks (with the notable exception of my family doctor, Dr. Bell, who is one of the coolest, most laid back awesome guys I know.)

So I can absolutely believe that the VA is the best hospital system in the US. They're good, nice people and they do an amazing job with what they're given to work with.

Did I say "Our schools are the best! Rah rah go America!"? No. No, I said they're working. They're functional. My car is a '94 Toyota. Is it working? Yes. Is it functional? Yes. Is it still a piece of sh*t? Yes.

As in the other thread, do try to keep up.

If there are 5 stupid people in MN, we'll have sufficient evidence to prove that the whole group is.

Airlines and car companies both failed horribly *before* gov't stepped in. That's *why* gov't stepped in. I for one don't think that letting our transportation and industry sectors fail is good for the nation.

As for failing education, it's a symptom of a culture based on excess and indulgence, not strictly a fault of how it's been administered.

As is the financial industry, food safety, and the health care system.

I think we've basically managed to prove that it doesn't matter who runs it in America, it's doomed to fail horribly, and so we shouldn't bother trying.

As a follow up to this thread, Nate Silver over at Fivethirtyeight.com took a look at this pool and found it very suspect.
