I found this interesting because the message that had filtered it's way to my ears concerning docs and healthcare reform, was not this one.

Quote:
Most Doctors support public option
When polled, "nearly three-quarters of physicians supported some form of a public option, either alone or in combination with private insurance options," says Dr. Salomeh Keyhani. She and Dr. Alex Federman, both internists and researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, conducted a random survey, by mail and by phone, of 2,130 doctors. They surveyed them from June right up to early September.

Of course. Doctors as a whole do care about their patients, and they would much rather have their patients be able to afford regular visits and proper treatments. Too many poor people put off going to the doctor until it's too late.

People in my city are lucky. We have an excellent public health department that provides everything from subsidized cholesterol treatments to my birth control pills. And its ZOMG TAXPAYER FUNDED! Socialism! But it's local taxes, with some state support, so the red-state fundies outside of our blue island of sanity can only rant and rave about the fact that state tax dollars can be used for a woman's IUD.

Most doctors, and particularly the ones who choose the ever-shrinking field of primary care/internal medicine, recognize the value of preventive care and maintenance care - the very things that fall through the cracks when people are forced to make monetary decisions about whether and when to go to the doctor.

I'd imagine the doctors who answered "no" were mainly surgeons and cardiologists. Their clients have no choice but to find the money. Cynically, I could point out that they're needed at least in part because of the lack of preventive and maintenance care.
