Google data center tourFollow

I'm not entirely sure how I missed this one, and I'm pretty sure I don't remember it being posted here, so I thought I'd share.

It's definitely not your standard data center (kind of expected, with Google), but if I had to imagine a Google data center prior to this video, I'd probably end up at the opposite end of the spectrum. Shipping containers as a server housing? Hell their servers don't even really have a chassis - just a tray panel with a motherboard and some mounted components. Very interesting stuff.

I knew about the shipping containers, but I'd never seen them. Interesting.

I heard a story the other day about shipping containers being used for buildings - homes and offices and such. Supposedly they're very weather resistant (hold up well against fire and floods).

I can't find that story now, but a search found this site that's a bit interesting - www.containerhomes.net

I'd heard on a podcast about the shipping container datacenters. apparently they have them scattered all over the world.

IBM will happily airlift you a prebuilt one and drop it on your company's roof.

So will Sun Microsystems, iirc.

I remember another story regarding the Google data centers (there are more than one), and their two key words were: Cheap and redundant. For the scale of data they need, they could not afford the really expensive (but reliable) big irons, so they decided to use off the shelf components instead. The storage has internal RAID 10 striping, and each data center hosts a portion of each other center's center's stuff, so in the event that one center is knocked offline by natural disaster, the data is not irretrievably lost.

Yeah. Container Computing is the latest buzzword. It allows you to achieve regionalization, while avoiding too much localization, and spreading out resources in a redundant and cost effective manner. Personally, my concern is that someone will just pull up with a big rig and drive off with your company's data, but that's just me. Thinking outta the box... hahah!

It's an idea being considered for large scale co-location as well. The idea is that instead of owning your own data center(s), you'd rent a spot somewhere else, and put your own container there. You could then rent spots at many locations and achieve some redundancy locationally at a much lower cost. You do this at many locations scattered around a region and you can provide enterprise level compute resources to your customers with higher availability and lower cost. It's a model that doesn't work with all business models, but for those that do, it's an interesting idea...
