Ted Kennedy was an effective Senator. But he did basically kill someone. Even if he wasn't drunk, he still walked away from a human being who was dead or dying. He didn't even tell anybody about it until the next morning. That's what's most damning. Also, it's not like he was some college kid who made a mistake either, he was 37.
That doesn't change all the good things he did; although the extent of how good they are is up to debate, as is any politician's legacy; I'm willing to admit that he was very effective in getting things done. But, if we're talking about Ted Kennedy as a person overall, it seems really silly to me that a large part of the conversation wouldn't be about what happened that night. I mean, I'm no Bush fan at all but honestly consider if he had done something like that in his 30's; the left would never let that go. Nor should they have if it was the case.
Now, did he do plenty of good things? Of course. But he did one really really horrible thing, and then quite a few immoral things, and how immoral they are is up for debate (getting expelled from harvard for cheating, cheating on his wife, etc).
I just want to add one more thing. And being from Mass, it kind of pisses me off more for some reason. His plea before his death for a change in the law that governs how a vacant Senate seat is filled was ridiculous. This shows that he's not concerned with what the people want, but what is best for his personal interests or those of the Democratic Party. When Mitt Romney was governor in 2004, he helped get the law changed to it's current form: there's a special election. But, Deval Patrick is a Democratic governor, so he wanted to reverse the very law he helped get enacted so that the governor can appoint someone again. He said that the people had a right to be represented, yet he missed 97% of the Senate roll call votes this year.
Anyway, I'm not saying he was the worst person ever, but come on, if you're gonna go on and on about all the great things he did, you have to mention these glaring flaws. I would expect the same kind of treatment for any politician, before anyone tries to throw a "Well Republican Senator/Governor/Rep SoandSo did X" because I'm not Republican, or conservative either. I just hate hypocrisy and spin.
