This is a crime? Don't blame Ted. He was just allowing her to better exercise her freedom as a responsible and self-starting American to save herself, and prove that she valued her life. It's not his fault that she couldn't rise to the challenge and magically will herself out of a sinking car. There's a HUGE difference between actually drowning her and just not helping her out some.

Kennedy was never charged and never paid for his crime - until this morning."

Looked all through everything I could find; despite being a common assumption, there was never any charge of Ted Kennedy being drunk during that ill-fated drive.

Also, not sure how eventually dying decades after a crime from a brain tumor after spending several months relaxing, visiting your family and friends, and working on important legislation is considered "paying for your crime." Maybe I should drive recklessly if that's the result!

Yeah, I should have said "next year" instead of "a year". I know Kennedy tried to shift that to appointing an short-term replacement but I don't think that had much traction even with the Democrats.

I assumed as much. You're usually on top of stuff like that, but I figured it would help ease confusion.

Also,

Oh, well thanks very much for clarifying that. I would have thought one with his finger on the pulse of the intentions of the Almighty would be able to spell a bit better; but never mind. As long as we can all rest assured that Senator Kennedy has gone to his just reward as envisioned by one as brilliant and obviously unbiased as you, well, I'm perfectly satisfied.

On July 19, 1969, Kennedy attended a party on Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts . At about 11:00 PM, he borrowed his chauffeur’s keys to his Oldsmobile limousine, and offered to give a ride home to Mary Jo Kopechne, a campaign worker. Leaving the island via an unlighted bridge with no guard rail, Kennedy steered the car off the bridge, flipped, and into Poucha Pond.

He swam to shore and walked back to the party, after passing several houses and a fire station. Then two friends returned with him to the scene of the accident. According to their later testimony, they told him what he already knew, that he was required by law to immediately report the accident to the authorities. Instead Kennedy made his way to his hotel, called his lawyer, and went to sleep. Kennedy called the police the next morning and by then the wreck had already been discovered. Before dying, Kopechne had scratched at the upholstered floor above her head in the upside-down car.

Wow sub-defaulted for pointing out that Ted Kennedy left a women to die a slow agonizing death.

Several things:

The ghost of Chappaquiddick has had its' revenge.

To judge by the size of his dome ol' Ted had a brain tumor for some time now.

If Algore had died at the same time as Kennedy we've had a media spasm of, "ironclad lion of the senate's lockbox," for as much as I heard talking heads refer to him as the LotS.

Ted was throwing off Death's average for harvesting off the Kennedy clan. More proof he sold his soul to Satan for an unscathed political career right after his impromptu midnight swim years ago.

I'd go on in this thread about how much the Kennedy family has influenced my political outlook, and how I actually teared up a bit when I heard this morning, but it'd just be ruined by a passing asshat righty.

I don't know why people are calling this part of the Kennedy curse, or revenge for past sins, or whatever. He was 77, that's an average life expectancy.

Well technically, the expectancy for a 77yo male is an additional 8.5 years, but still. He was old.

Let me see if I understand your statement: Ted Kennedy's death last night from brain cancer was tragic in that he was involved in an accident which killed his female companion decades ago? Ok, you go on about that, I'm sure it's helping you look smarter and more compassionate.

I think Teddy had enough money and/or connections that he didn't need socialized health care.

Yes, I know.

And if he fought to help the passengers of his car that he just drove off a bridge as hard as he fought for government run healthcare maybe Mary Jo Kopechne would still be alive to vote for his healthcare plan.

Let me speak a little more slowly for you.

You see Ted drove his car off a bridge and let the women that was with him die a slow agonizing death while he went home took a nap and called his lawyer so she (if she was still alive) might not think that him not living to see universal healthcare as the greatest tragedy.

I didn't mean she was a senator, she was campaign worker who im sure would have supported and been in favor of a Universal Healthcare bill if Ted Kennedy hadn't drove her off a bridge and left her for dead while he saved himself.

Im sure you knew that right? Right?

But don't worry about it Joph you have the word "Excellent" under your name on a gaming message board and Pensive a guy without a job and who lives with his mom thinks your cool, im sure that will translate into success in the real world. Im sure of it!!!!!

Look man, I'm not sure how I feel about being the Michelle Obama to your Varus. It's kind of creepy, and if you're really just lusting over me that badly, you might be able to save the relationship, but find a better way to express those feelings, okay champ?

Campaign workers don't get a vote in Congress for health care bills. I'm sure you knew that right? Right?

Ok then.

I was talking about this to a coworker yesterday and I completely called that this would happen. Not sure if anyone here saw the movie Shoot 'Em Up but it's the same concept Clive Owen pointed out to the Senator before killing the guy. Ol' Teddy dies and the Dems are rushing to pass NHC to "win it for him."

I always get a kick out of it when people point out that another poster is a jobless person living in their mom's basement when the same could be said of them.

It's particularly amusing when the accusation is made out of jealousy. "Wah, you can string words together, you must have no life!"
