I'm divided on the life of Ted Kennedy. On the one hand, I respect him for his liberal views and longevity in MA and US politics. On the other hand, there have been several things I haven't liked about him.
Pros:
-Was part of several great pieces of legislation, including the 1991 Civil Rights Act, the 1990 Americans with DIsabilities Act, the Ryan White AIDS Care Act, and the Children's Health Insurance Program (zomg, socialized medical attention!)
-Has been one of the major Democratic presences for decades
-Always seemed to follow what he felt was best for his country's people
Cons:
-Kopechne death
-Failed to become president in 1980
-Messy social life, to say the least. Yet, survived scandal politically, unlike many others in similar situations.
-Got on board with Clinton's healthcare reform and failed
-Supported "No Child Left Behind," which was a freaking idiotic plan
I'm sad he's gone, but I'd like a better review of what he did; the guy was in the senate for almost twice as long as I have been alive!

Actually, Ted wrote a letter to Governor Patrick shortly before his death asking that Patrick appoint a someone to take his seat in the interim before the special election, & said appointee would NOT have the option to run in the special election, so his life's work, Healthcare Reform, could be accomplished.
This would require an act of the State House, which has been bickering over party lines about it since.

Politics and opinions aside, Ted Kennedy gave more of himself to the American people than all the other Kennedy's combined. He'll leave a big hole to fill.

Yes, everyone dies eventually. But it's absolutely terrible luck when so many people from one family die in terrible ways.

Looked all through everything I could find; despite being a common assumption, there was never any charge of Ted Kennedy being drunk during that ill-fated drive.
Also, not sure how eventually dying decades after a crime from a brain tumor after spending several months relaxing, visiting your family and friends, and working on important legislation is considered "paying for your crime." Maybe I should drive recklessly if that's the result!

On July 19, 1969, Kennedy attended a party on Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts . At about 11:00 PM, he borrowed his chauffeur’s keys to his Oldsmobile limousine, and offered to give a ride home to Mary Jo Kopechne, a campaign worker. Leaving the island via an unlighted bridge with no guard rail, Kennedy steered the car off the bridge, flipped, and into Poucha Pond.
He swam to shore and walked back to the party, after passing several houses and a fire station. Then two friends returned with him to the scene of the accident. According to their later testimony, they told him what he already knew, that he was required by law to immediately report the accident to the authorities. Instead Kennedy made his way to his hotel, called his lawyer, and went to sleep. Kennedy called the police the next morning and by then the wreck had already been discovered. Before dying, Kopechne had scratched at the upholstered floor above her head in the upside-down car.

As a side note, the DCCC actually sent me an email that didn't end in a plea for cash so that was something.

Oh, well thanks very much for clarifying that. I would have thought one with his finger on the pulse of the intentions of the Almighty would be able to spell a bit better; but never mind. As long as we can all rest assured that Senator Kennedy has gone to his just reward as envisioned by one as brilliant and obviously unbiased as you, well, I'm perfectly satisfied.
