The South African, rackless 18-year-old Caster Semanya, after winning the 800m final at the world championship in Berlin was asked to prove her femaleness. This is her first world class race outside of Africa.

The IAAF has ordered a gender test. I'm not sure how often these gender tests are requested, but letting the order for this testing go public is apparently a big no-no.

How would you feel if you were asked to prove your gender in a laboratory?

I'd feel like it's time to get a haircut, and maybe some make-up.

I saw that race, and it was sick. She was so far ahead of the field it was ridiculous. And she really looks like a dude.

I think that it's only fair they do tests, but the manner and timeliness of their announcement (just before she due to race) was quite disgraceful. Still I'll be intersted in the results.

All of this is dwarfed by the sheer awesomeness of Usain Bolt, though. The man's a freak. They should test him to see if he's really human.

I'd pee on their foot. That would handily solve both their question and my annoyance.

The real kicker is her voice. Find a video of her talking. That voice? Guy.

Semenya is strikingly muscular and angular, but her handlers insist that she is most certainly not a male.

Really? Common terminology? As for the test - looks like it could be a dude to me. How hard is it to drop trou and show the snatch? Even if in a closed room to a female official?

sexual organs =/= gender

Haven't you learnt anything from your time in the OOT?

You're right. My mistake. This could clearly be a female trapped in a man's body. But in a contest of phsyical prowess, "gender" as the OOT would like to refer to it is irrelevant.

Yeah, but there's more to it than that. I don't remember the details, but sexual organs alone are not always enough to determine gender. And not "gender" as in what people feel, but like "chromosome" gender. I'm sure Anna will be here any minute to explain it better.

She has to be a hermaphrodite or something at the very least. I've bever seen a woman with that kinda muscle mass outside of female body builders. Total manface, no trace of a rack, 8 pack abs, and I think her biceps are larger than most guys. I'd be totally convinced but I haven't seen any kinda shot of her with an Adam's Apple showing.

There's always the slight possibility s/he is some androgynous mutant and that's why it's taking them so long to find a **** and balls.

Here it is explained:

Quote:
Medical experts are investigating whether a new world 800m champion can compete as a woman - and it is not as easy as just taking off her clothes.

There are medical conditions in which someone can have the outward sexual organs of a female but have the XY chromosomes of a male.

Girls can pee on target - with some practice.

I'd probably be a smartass and inform them that gender is not necessarily synonymous with sex as it can be interpreted as a fluid, sociological construct. Then I'd call them uneducated, ignorant bastards.

"Gender" as you are referring to it, is called "sex" in any modern day biology, physiology, or sexuality course Smiley: schooled

At least, it was three years ago when I had a course on it!

Edit: I base this on a class called "The Biology of Human Sexuality," and another called "Women's Studies."

According to the OOT, if this chick says she's a chick then that's what's important. Why can't the IAAF see this?! Smiley: frown

A sports writer from the Nation puts this controversy in context:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMUIoO8eArA

"There is a twisted sexist, racist, heteronormative history that involves the way that track and field and Olympic officials understand gender"

Watch more--he has some great points.

I have to say, they seemed a lot more lenient back in the days. I remember seeing East German shot-put "female" athletes, and, well, they looked much more manly than this South African person ever will.

Tests have revealed Caster Semenya's testosterone level to be three times higher than those normally expected in a female sample, BBC Sport understands.

Analysis prior to the World Athletics Championships and the 18-year-old's big improvement prompted calls for a gender test from the sport's governing body.

It was made public only hours before the South African, who has been backed by her nation, won the 800m in Berlin.

A high level of the hormone does not always equate to a failed drugs test.

But the news will only increase speculation surrounding Semenya, who arrived back in South Africa to a rapturous welcome on Tuesday.
