Researchers have found a genetic mutation in two people who need far less sleep than average, a discovery that might open the door to understanding human sleep patterns and lead to treatments for insomnia and other sleep disorders.

The finding, published in the Friday issue of the journal Science, marks the first time scientists have identified a genetic mutation that relates to sleep duration in any animal or human.

Although the mutation has been identified in only two people, the power of the research stems from the fact that the shortened sleep effect was replicated in mouse and fruit-fly studies. As a result, the research now gives scientists a clearer sense of where to look for genetic traits linked to sleep patterns.

“I think it’s really a landmark study,” said Dr. Charles A. Czeisler, a leading sleep researcher and chief of sleep medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. “It opens up a window to the understanding of the genetic basis of individual differences in sleep duration. Now you have a piece of the puzzle and you can begin to try to trace back as opposed to having little information as to where to start.”

The gene mutation was found by scientists at the University of California, San Francisco, who were conducting DNA screening on several hundred blood samples from people who had taken part in sleep studies.

The scientists were searching the samples for variations in several genes thought to be related to the sleep cycle. In what amounts to finding a needle in a haystack, they spotted two DNA samples with abnormal copies of a gene called DEC2, which is known to affect circadian rhythms. They then worked back to find out who provided the samples and found a mother and daughter who were naturally short sleepers. The women routinely function on about 6 hours of sleep a night; the average person needs 8 to 8.5 hours of sleep.

I wish I could survive on as little sleep as he does.

6 hours a night is "far less sleep" than normal? I often get about four.

Then again, I don't do what most people refer to as "function" normally, either.

It depends if how tired you are. I average about six during the week but I get tired. He can survive on like three and be perfectly functional. Crazy.

As far as I remember hearing, it should be 8-9 until you're through your 20s, and then down to 8 per night until retirement.

I personally get by with only 7 or so a night. I want to sleep more, but then it feels like I just sleep and work, which is a depressing existence!

Adolescents need more like 9-11 hours. They have a later sleep cycle too. There have been studies in Minnesota where they set the school day later (like instead of 7:30-8, it's more like 8:30-9) and the amount of absenteeism decreased tremendously. I talked to a sleep specialist who attributed alot of ADD diagnoses to kids who were exhausted and schools that were starting too early.

My problem is that I don't get tired until the middle of the night but have to get up around 6:30 or 7. I've always been like that--even when I was really little and I've talked to different sleep specialists who say that it's not easy to change a sleep pattern like that b/c it's somewhat inborn.

I'm planning on trying a sleep schedules where you sleep for 3 hours at some point and have three 20 minute naps equally spaced out. My friend has been doing it for about a month and is giving rave reviews.

A cool book about it if you're interested

My fiance will sleep for 14 hours if I don't wake her up. I'm not that bad but have never been an early riser myself, and over the past few years we've found ourselves sleeping later and later on weekdays to the point that neither of us gets to work until 10 am most mornings.

If you do 20 minute naps you apparently start to have lots of dreams that you actually remember.

OI have two modes: sleep, and don't sleep. When the former is engaged, I will sleep for 14-20 hours, with a few hours in between. When the latter is engaged, I won't sleep for 20-36 hours, with, again, a few hours in between. Moderation? ***** that noise.

I can't say I get 9, but I need to be in my bed for 9. Between apnea, being a light sleeper and a wiggle worm, I guarantee I maybe get around 4-5 out of that time. And if I don't get that 9 bed hours, better watch out because I make chicks with severe PMDD look like angels.

Five to six if I'm lucky on days I work, eight or so on days I don't, up to twelve if it's been awhile since got a reasonable amount. I'd love to be able to get eight on a regular basis but it just doesn't work out that way most days.Smiley: glare

I heart sleep. I need 9 hours to function at my best. Less than 7 hours and I'm grumpy all day. Lately with a newborn, I'm getting broken sleep and functioning ok but it's a mental thing. I know I have to do it so for now I'm pushing through and doing alright. Normally it would make me a walking train wreck

The part about being able to be perfectly functional on 3 hours of sleep is what amazes me the most.

6 hours? Thats the average amount I sleep, barring days where I get ridiculously tired.

I sleep 6 to 6.5 hours a night and take a 20min nap most every afternoon (it's essential). I'm not finding I need MORE sleep as I get older, but more consistent sleep - all-nighters really take a toll on me these days.

[]

I'm curious as to how Anna is so in-touch with Nobby's sleep patterns?? hmmmmm

That's simple.

While Darqflame has experienced my brief periods of sleep, Anna (like many wimmins and ****** here) fantasises regularly about my somnolent body snuggled aganst hers.
