Healthcare Reform, where can I locate the facts?Follow

I usually have A LOT of time on my hands at work on SAT and I would like to fill them getting a bit more educated on the Bills up for vote in our congress, specificaly those on Healthcare reform.

First I googled it like any red blooded 'merican only to find two VERY polar results, neither of which actually gave me anything to read, just oppinions.

The website http://www.healthreform.gov/ is just a bunch of fancy videos and 'click you state to see how great things could be' interactive stuff that I guess I could make a 5th grade civics poster out of but nothing laid out for me to actually understand whats going on.

Then there were a few links to FOX news where Sean Hannity tries to flash pretty graphics on the screen for entertainment value as he sips the blood of virgins from a coffee mug that I think had jesus/the twin towers/Rush's salty balls printed on it.

I searched the library of Congress' site for a bit but i'll be honest, my skills as a government investigator are rather lacking.

So I turn to you, video game forum, to ask:
"Has a bill even been written yet?"
"Has anything gone to vote yet on heathcare?"
"If nothing has been spelled out yet, why is everyone freaking out before anythings actually been written down?"
"If a bill has been written down is it available for public viewing?"

I would just really like to know what the proposal is on healthcare reform is before letting the flood gates open on the oppinions.

Several. Different versions created by different committees in both chambers.

Quote:
"Has anything gone to vote yet on heathcare?"

Not before a full chamber of Congress, no. Stuff has been voted on in committee.

Quote:
"If nothing has been spelled out yet, why is everyone freaking out before anythings actually been written down?"

If you wanted to be gracious, you'd say that people wanted to be sure the bills were shaped properly at the earliest levels. If you wanted to be realistic, you'd say that it's a propaganda battle where people overexaggerate and plain make shit up.

Quote:
"If a bill has been written down is it available for public viewing?"

Check Opencongress.org Here is the House bill. Here is one of the Senate bills in committee that goes for a public option. Another bill in committee does not but relies on multi-state co-ops to purchase private insurance at lower prices. Can't find a link to it right now. Really, if you use the advanced search at Thomas.loc.gov and start searching for "health care" by committees, you'll see just how much, and at the same time so little, there is to get involved in.

Finally, here's an article giving a brief run-down of the three major proposals right now: those from the House, the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate HELP Committee.

They couldn't put death squads in the revised bill only because Cheney was monopolizing them. Man, what a ****.

And how do we pay for it? Stop the Bush tax cuts in 2010 instead of expiring in 2011 and do not extend them. That saves $1.5 trillion (for 10 years) and we'll have $1/2 trillion left. Health care reform is projected at $1 trillion for 10 years so there - it's paid with no tax increases for the middle class. Also the federal government MUST STOP taking money from the Medicare and Social Security Trust Fund (which is the reason why the funds are headed to insolvency in the first place) to use for general fund expenses. If we just left Social Security and Medicare funds alone, there would be NO Medicare crisis. I will happily pay my share knowing that everyone will have their health taken care of. Is that socialist? So be it. I'll start another company to make up for the additional taxes I have to pay.

I laughed.

Have had more than one congressional staffer and the General Council of my current massive health care concern consulting gig tell me that all of the current in process bills are dead.

Which sounds about right. Expect a "fresh approach" coming out of the OEOB after the recess, probably replete with Obama's unique personal special blend of voluntary assrape "compromise" to entrenched interests. If we are *exceedingly* fortunate, some traction will be gained via an "insureds bill of rights" or the like, which will be, of course, completely toothless, but maybe enough to get some tiny useful incremental bit of change passed, like not voiding claims from cancer patients who didn't mention they used an inhaler for asthma when they were 11 on their pre-insurance paperwork.

More likely we'll get almost nothing.

Interesting how it morphed from "Healthcare Plan" to "Healthcare Reform".

I urge anyone who is politically active to get involved ASAP, to insure an opportunity isnt missed here.

Regardless of your stance on Universal Care, I think we can all agree the amount of money wasted in the process is staggering. Tort reform is needed as well as deceptive billing practices & "Fraud & Abuse" being minimized.

I cant find it now, (so I wont quote it directly) but I remember seeing some data showing just how little of our money is actually used for patient care....which hopefully is what we want out of this.

Hi. You forgot the part about having giant bags of money. People who are politically active and can deliver giant bags of money should get involved. People who care a great deal but can't deliver the cash should take a nap.

This won't happen. Zero chance. None. It's more like June 12th will be designated an official Federal holiday known as "Rape an infant with a Dremmel Tool day"

as well as deceptive billing practices & "Fraud & Abuse" being minimized.

This is a meaningless statement. What the fuck does this even pretend to mean? We should try to curb fraud? Gee, thanks, *******. Maybe if we pass 11 more laws designed to enforce the existing fraud laws, Radiologists will stop wanting to build summer homes in the Hamptons.

I can't find it now either, but I remember seeing some data about how ignorant idiots form political opinions based basically on whim and whatever they last overheard at their ball waxing salon.

Actually, having been involved in a Grand Jury probe of our local County Behavioral Health Dept, I know individuals can make a difference.

(we got state oversight for Hippa violations, several de-certifications of Prop 36 providers & new RFP procedures, prison time for elderly Guardians & re-structuring of that whole system.....also, now non-exempt employees are expected to put in 40 hrs a week if they want 40 hrs of pay...saved millions)

Of course not, but it's good sometimes. Like those times when there isn't a fucking thing you can do to effect change.

Kinda what I was saying...sounds like fraud & abuse to me, but I'm an ignorant idiot so maybe we should both take a nap.

Probably just you, asshole. I regularly deliver big bags of money to the Democratic Party. While we both care, no one in power gives a fuck what you think, and I'm willing to work for near useless change. US politics is all about near worthless change.

Actually, having been involved in a Grand Jury probe of our local County Behavioral Health Dept, I know individuals can make a difference.

Yeah, look, sparky the big problem with the above quote is your use of the word "we". How many of these things wouldn't have happened if you had been raped to death by a gorilla at the age of 5. Right, none. I'm vicariously happy when the Red Sox win, what I don't think is that I *fucking actually had something to do with outcome of the game*. Understand? You're a fan of politics. Not a player. A spectator.

So,even though I didn't express a political opinion...my "whims" come from direct personal experience

That's a great place to form opinions, personal experience. A solid foundation from which to develop an entire wold view. Congratulations on somehow arriving at a system of belief retarded children find cloyingly insufficient at age five.

They'll probably pass something. Hopefully, it'll be toothless and minor. The last thing we need right now is yet another ridiculously expensive government program which at best simply spreads already dwindling resources around.

So more like a week ago, and I said "toothless and minor". Close enough...

Honestly, has anyone *not* seen this coming? Universal Health care is a third rail of politics. There's just no way to bring it with out pissing off more people than you please. Minor reforms work fine, but sweeping changes and government options and whatnot require vastly more groundwork than anyone ever seems to be willing to put in. I suppose if we had a Dem president just as popular coming in as Obama in an economic environment that is swinging positive rather than negative, it might be possible. Um... But those are pretty much the conditions Clinton had when he tried it, and it didn't work then either...

The process has been pretty predictable from the start. Everyone still has to go through the motions though.

Well Stephen Hawking has spoken out

Quote:
Investor's Business Daily recently wrote an editorial which contained the following statement:

"People such as scientist Stephen Hawking wouldn't have a chance in the U.K., where the National Health Service would say the life of this brilliant man, because of his physical handicaps, is essentially worthless."

The statement has been removed from the editorial since its original publication. Apparently the rigorous research team at IBD didn't realize that Hawking is British and has been the recipient of British health care during the whole time he's lived longer than seemingly any other ALS patient!

and

Quote:
"I wouldn't be alive today if it weren't for the NHS. I have received a large amount of high quality treatment without which I would not have survived." ---Stephen Hawking, August 11, 2009

SRSLY - If pubbies want to slag off Obama's proposals, that's fine. If they want to trash the British NHS, they're going to look even more bloody stupid.

Surveys of people who have used the NHS show an extremely high satisfaction rate. Pubbies and the Right Wing Press (UK & USA) are happy to quote those who haven't or a tiny minority who had a crap experience.

GFY
